Opeth played it safe on quite a few of their albums tbh. Doesn't make them bad albums though - I'm just saying.

Opeth don't play it safe on their albums, that's just JT being JT

They only played it safe on PC tbh

I guess in terms of song structure, a lot of their stuff is relatively predictable but I don't think that's necessarily playing it safe or anything.

Most bands do that way more than opeth anyway

Opeth rarely took risks with their sound and stuck to the same formula for a lot of their albums and that is pretty much the definition of playing it safe.

But it's not like they challenged themselves on PC unlike with their other albums. You could also argue that GR was playing it safe because they just made a "typical" Opeth album for that time, albeit a fantastic one

That's how I feel about GR but like you said, still a fantastic one.

Also, that acoustic part in the beginning of The Moor is niiiiice.

I guess I was stating the obvious but people keep acting like Opeth never played it safe.

Can't blame them though, they found their sound and stuck to it (bar a few obvious exceptions).

well the formula was the same for a long time but they tried some new twists on gr and ws (which mostly worked out pretty well)

Deliverance was a change too, it simplified their formula to an extent and a lot of people just didn't respond to it the way they did BWP and GR
