repetitive as a criticism is interesting: not because it's inaccurate, but because it's so clearly a proxy for deeper more ineffable taste issues. there are lots of songs whose problems I can't sum up more clearly than "needs more variety/too repetitive" but I also listen to literal loop music so it can't be that per se. and yet

yeah, i've wondered about this quite a few times - think in most case it's slightly more accurate to talk about the mileage of ideas/depth of atmosphere or whatever, but even that still feels like it's a step away from whatever the Essential Thing driving the critical impulse is

I think it’s quite simple. It’s the quality and depth of the material and the thematic impact of repetition on a songwriting level

that's probably the best way of breaking it down. but drawing theme from repetition can be hard when it's not disintegration loops or caretaker. and once in a while I'll find that a phrase I love initially is diminished by its being repeated, or that a seemingly unremarkable one will gradually become affecting through loopage

Who would leave their son out in the sun is so perfect. The tone of the singing at the end perfectly emphasizes the futility of the lyrics and is such a great climax

This oblivion access looks hot

But I gotta say, HANL suck really hard live, it shows that they are not used to the live format. Especially the vocals are quite atrocious
