It's weird how they got technical and less melodic on ITP and Human, then again more melodic, less technical and more song focused on Symbolic, but then also again more technical and very proggy on TSOP

Chuck just brought the riffs consistently

I'd say Symbolic is certainly very technical, maybe one of their most. The difference is the aggression and insanity are dialed back a bit to allow for, as you said, more song-focused writing. Also, most of Symbolic is in 4/4 (cant think of a single moment not in 4/4 off the top of my head outside of 'Perennial Quest' which is the only song that goes all crazy with the time sigs, and the main riff of the t/t is 6/4 I think? but there might be moments I'm forgetting in other songs). So it's certainly not as proggy or jazzy as the stuff between it. But the technicality on Symbolic is almost unmatched; those guys change shit up on a dime like no other musicians. Beautiful stuff

This was my favorite for a while, until ITP took the throne for me lol.
It's still up there for sure, but ITP just hits me in a way the others don't.

Yeah ITP slays hard too.
I like Gene Hoglan a lot but it's totally unfair for me to compare him to Reinert for me personally. Not even a contest.
This lineup in general was absolutely insane and they completely lived up to their potential here

I feel that. I personally prefer Hoglan overall, but it's not that cut and dry. They're both goat drummers imo, and there's different things I like about both. I couldn't picture this album with another drummer, but same goes for ITP, if that makes sense lol
Both have insane lineups really. Di Gorgio on bass, and both have some sick guitar/bass interplay. Masvidal is a beast here, and as much as I love the guitar work on this, the guitar on ITP between Andy LaRocque and Chuck is just fucking nuts.
Both slay hard though, really comes down to preference I think. It's honestly hard to even compare them directly since they have such different sounds. That's one of the things I love about Death, each album has its own sound, but also still sounds uniquely Death. Idk, point is Death is awesome lol

This is like #2-3 for me.
But I have a hard time ranking Death, and it's definitely changed over the years (and prob months lol). Actually, I suck at ranking albums in general. But ITP has remained #1 for sure.
Symbolic, SH, and Leprosy are pretty much interchangeable for me. So I guess it's something like ITP -> This -> those three -> SBG - > >>>>>> TSoP.

"Death is awesome" [2]
Human is "raw" death metal perfected.
ITP took things in a bit more of a proggy direction and the guitar work is just insane.
Symbolic went for a more melodic sound but still brings some of the best Death riffs.
I'm constantly cycling between these 3 albums for the "best" Death album.
