Hang on, did you not know this Doof was the same DDD?

He just wrote more universal songs than Black Francis, Thurston Moore, J Mascis, Mark Arm, Paul Westerberg I guess - it's just what it was, we can debate it but it's already in the history books.
Timing and exposure played their part but I still think the writing was that bit different to what had come before. Cobain being humble/faux humble about his influences doesn't really change much.

xxxtentacion writes more universal songs than Father John Misty.

Your point is lost on me.
I like this I don't think I like xxxtentacion.
You are asking what made Nirvana more different and/or special than the 80s forebears and if they should be considered pioneering - this doesn't add to the debate lol

xxxtentacion's lyrics are more relate-able to most people than Father John Misty's. My point is it doesn't matter.
"they should be considered pioneering - this doesn't add to the debate lol"
Exactly, appealing to how universal the message of the songs were is wrong. It has nothing to with musical evolution.

Writing universally relatable lyrics isn’t necessarily a positive, in fact it can make music appear generic & lacking substance or intrigue. I guess this depends on your perspective but it’s how a significant amount of pop music is marketed & also where it (often) fails.

"Hang on, did you not know this Doof was the same DDD?" I did lol but it doesn t matter. What matters is that these discussions are not changing anyone positively unfortunately. I use this to improve my experience with music I don t get, didn t grew with etc...and of course to share how awesome are the things I like lol or learned how to like. This is intelegent ppl attached to egos sharing their stubborn opinions lol that aside I love you all x) tks to all of you I now love thrash, dm, BM, sludge, Doom, post punk and so on...I grew with Nirvana and they teached me how simple music could be so disturbing (not on a bad way)...perfect to learn some chords and still make you feel special.

'Exactly, appealing to how universal the message of the songs were is wrong. It has nothing to with musical evolution.'
Good music doesn't necessarily have much of a link to musical evolution though - music could evolve into something awful at any time and frequently does!
Scaruffi I've always said rates innovation above anything else, hence almost always rates debuts and early albums higher. I don't agree with that at all - innovation in and of itself is no indication of inherent musical quality.
I love refinement albums and I'm not ashamed.

Universal message isn't quite the same as universal appeal either.
I think I'm just saying Nirvana appealed to more people than Sonic Youth and the Pixies and I get why, and personally I also agree they were a band who had a much bigger impact on me and even now I consider the two 'big' Nirvana albums as 'better' than near enough any other 'alt rock'.

"Good music doesn't necessarily have much of a link to musical evolution though"
" innovation in and of itself is no indication of inherent musical quality."
Agreed, but I'd say the best music usually does. The majority of albums praised by critics and sput/rym are original.
I have heard this all before, why would I bother listening to this again?" +
this music just reminds me of other bands, why would I rate this as high as the album that creates it's own special universe that I visit every time I listen? are thoughts that have great effect on how I rate music.

I'd say popularity of musical forms does have a massive and frequent times pioneering impact on musical evolution but I might leave it here - until next time on the great Nirvana debate ;D

Not everything is this special though, and keeping it as simple and raw as it can get.
Whats your take on Bleach guys? Only more recently I came to get that that one is anything but grunge. Does it have some sludge there going on or what?
|
| |
"Not everything is this special though,"
Agreed, hey I never claimed Nirvana were nothing original at all. I just think they are not THAT original.
I think Bleach is crap bar a few tracks. Yeah it sounds more like sludge and hardcore. Closer to their roots and the underground, which means cooler to some.

Most underappreciated part of this album (or any Nirvana album) is Krist's bass playing, some of the most catchy and memorable bass-lines I've ever heard
