Prod doesn't add to or detract from my enjoyment of this record.

Ask me the same question about any album and literally 99% of the time that will be my answer.

I'm listening to the comparison between the original and the 2011 remaster, and man they really flattened the guitars in the remaster. It does give the production a bit more punch, but I kinda miss the warmth of the original

the drums in the remaster sound awful, snare sounds like it peaks on every hit and it has fart kicks

This is my second favorite Death album after Symbolic. I think the big advantage it has is that contains the most unpredictable and non-linear songwriting. It’s not just the same “verse>small bridge>chorus>bridge>solo>repeat” formula of a lot of Death’s other stuff. There’s a lot more variety here

I think Cynic’s Focus album really rubbed off on them a lot here

Then again, I just realized Focus came out after this one... hmm, who was influencing who?

True. I was actually just thinking about that recently... the fact that Watchtower’s debut came out in 1985 is fucking ridiculous. Master of Puppets was heralded as such a massive influence on prog metal, and yet a more technical and sophisticated album was hiding under people’s noses the entire time

Don’t get me wrong, I still prefer MoP. But it’s still pretty crazy

yepp... or the fact that it wasnt until jarzombek joined and the release of c&r in 89 that they started to get a bit more recognition... still not enough though lol

a lot of energetic disassembly material was already written in 1984 or 1983 btw if you can believe that... some demos were made, at least one of which you can find online

metallica are an interesting band to bring up, because they simultaneously get too much credit from ... certain kinds of people who primarily listen to rock and metal and not much else, but also not enough credit specifically for how much more interesting their songwriting was compared to like 99.9% of metal bands lol

i suppose there may be some comparison there with death, heh

lol, I’d say that’s why a site like Sputnik exists. Because of people who want to bring that culture back
