"besides neige himself would tell u that alcest havent been bm for like a decade now"

Kinda peculiar that the man is so intent on denying the importance of the music that propelled his career. He seems to outright loathe the style at this point. True he does say that calling the dreamscapes he describes in his music as black metal does a disservice to the implied beauty, but I wouldn't even be surprised is Neige forces himself to ever being involved with Peste Noire or any of his early stuff

naw he was pretty serious about bm back in the day, he just moved on to music that better fits his vision...or dreams

i wouldnt begrudge him if he dissociates himself from the scene tbh, as it seems one of the main sticks to beat him with from ppl within the scene is the fact that he's not bm, or bm enough

With Peste Noire on his resume tho, I feel those claims that he is not BM enough are thrown around with little thought.

And there's no shame in changing up musical style in my eyes, but berating the material that got him to where he is and what so many people connect to is a bit insensitive in regards of artist to fan relations.

And I do remember now my gf showing me the Alcest demo and that shit is raw as a slab of meat so yeah the guy did mean serious business in his old days in regards to black metal ethos and craft.

Pretty sure I read that Ulver don't look back too fondly on their black metal material either.

I have as well but they at least do acknowledge the significance it had on jumpstarting their (or rather Garm's) career.

But you do bring up a good point anyways

Doing what you want and saying what you think sounds pretty metal to me. And having to show respect for a genre is a bit ridiculous. With time people feel different about things

Wouldn't be surprised if Garm sees it unfavourably simply because 20+ years later people are still going on about ulver like they're a BM band or that they should be playing bm

Do people still say stuff like that?

It's weird that I never did this before, but I finally looked closely at the timeline for the band's history of members, and it was about what I expected in that after bm/folk releases, Garm essentially made the band his solo project to explore programming and other genres of music.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulver#Timeline

1999-2001 all of the band members left except for Garm. By 2001, two new guys came in who handled programming, keyboards, and miscellaneous stuff. It wasn't until the end of 2009 that Ulver suddenly added like four more people all at once for whatever reason.

How has Ulver ever been a "side project"?

EDIT: Oh wait, you edited. Or I'm going crazy.

That was a typo, I meant "solo" project, since the two other guys were barely involved in some of the 2000-2010 releases.

Ulver comes on the radio all the time in my state, it's true. I remember Jammin' 94.5 playing Hallways of Always and Let The Children Go back-to-back just the other day on my way to work. I'm so glad that I can trust local radio to always play what I wanna hear instead of churning out what's popular all the time in restaurants, malls, parties etc. again and again and again and again, until I feel like I've finally fucking lost it...
