"dunno man, i mean, how many bands and artists have you actually heard of mentioning the Beatles "
Like everyone from all genres of music tbh
I've heard Sabbath from mostly metal and hard rock

they dont have to mention the beatles (or whatever band we're talking about) to be influenced by them
the string of influence over time etc, im thinking of the reach of their influence directly or indirectly
the sound of nearly all music that in the end was derived from psychedelic rock / proto-metal can be traced back to them imo, this includes really all genres of rock/metal/punk

"True, but there have been others afterwards who have been quite influential like Metallica, Nirvana, Michael Jackson, etc"
I'd also add Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Queen to the list.

I remember when my friend showed me Dragonaut by Sleep for the first time. I said they totally stole the verse riff from Lord of This World, she got so mad lol. listening to it now, they do share similarities, but yea I wouldn't call it a ripoff really.

It's crazy to think about Black Sabbath being almost solely responsible for metal. If they had never formed, would the scene have been markedly different? Or was it something that was bound to happen, like some kind of cultural critical mass?
I know Led Zep and Purple play a role in how m/ evolved, but most people consider them rock bands. They added some folkishness, energy and speed to metal, but they didn't have that... thing that made BS so metal.

That's because Black Sabbath stripped away much of the blues influence (though not all of it, obviously) that defined bands like Led Zeppelin to make the riffs the primary component of the music. Add to that the fact that many of the riffs are played with Geezer Butler placing his bass lines directly one octave underneath Tony's guitar (usually with lower tunings, such as with Into the Void), so that extra doomy feel comes in

"If they had never formed, would the scene have been markedly different? Or was it something that was bound to happen, like some kind of cultural critical mass?"
You could argue both are true. Bands like Cream and The Jimi Hendrix Experience were already laying down the groundwork for the metal sound, having taken influence themselves from blues guys like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. It was bound to happen, sure, but you gotta give Sabbath credit for being the first to make something definitively metal.

Amen.
With most other bands, you can clearly see the influences that made them what they are, but Black Sabbath sort of just appeared. Like someone (probably Jesus) planted a new seed and introduced a new sound.
I'm not entirely convinced it was bound to happen.

the groundwork had been laid agreed jac but they were really the first to have that unique metal sound
