Spotify just sent me an e-mail regarding new music by Death. Whelp, it's actually just a startup metalcore band called "Death, Aftermath" and spotify made a parsing mistake. If you like Veil of Maya you'll probably like it at least.

Gyro hates prog metal anyway, so I just stopped caring after a while

Been jamming this for a week straight at work. If co-workers dislike it, I am sure there are other jobs out there.

Probably the least consistent and weakest Death album overall. Clearly meant to be a Control Denied EP. However, it's still has its moments that make it worth a listen every once in a while and Christy's drumming is especially impressive here.
Also, Story to Tell is easily the worst Death song. What the hell were they thinking?

"Also, Story to Tell is easily the worst Death song"
Wow disagreed so hard, 1:40 into Story to Tell is one of my favorite moments of the album. Very somber but then at 2:35 it becomes uplifting, it's such a roller coaster.
Every song is like that, people call it wank but I never heard metal wankery that affects me emotionally as much as in here. It's not far from being my favorite metal album

yeah Story to Tell slays

It's not really wank. It sort of devolves into a scattershot mess that falls apart around the middle and then decides to incorporate some shitty alt-rock melodies for good measure. It's less an issue of complexity and more an issue of composition where there are just a bunch of ideas stitched together with little regard for synthesis. Not to mention that this literally reuses riffs from ITP which was pretty much the peak of Death's progressive era in both lineup and composition.

Can't get into this one. It's okay. Front loaded, imo. Lose all interest near the fifth or sixth track.

This flows smooth as silk for me and seems very coherent througout. It has abrupt transitions but they don't bother me at all, it all flows like a journey. A journey on a roller coaster but still one with a direction.
ITP is my 2nd favorite so we'll agree on the greatness of that one at least

i think i prefer this to symbolic

I prefer Symbolic but this is relatively close. This is hella underrated on this site for some reason.

| |
Album Rating: 3.5
I wouldn't say it's underrated because the average is 4.4. Maybe there's just a very vocal minority of naysayers.
