Hot take: this album is more slowcore than it is post-rock

I think this influenced post-rock rather than being post-rock itself.

I mean aside from For Dinner nothing here is primarily a post-rock song.

I just feel like this album doesn't abstract far enough of consistently enough from rock in terms of its textural approach to earn the "post" label.

Tracks 1, 2 and 6 are all obviously "rock" songs in terms of songwriting

If that's all you need for post-rock then post-rock has been around since the 60s

Probably not that informed since I barely know any first wave post-rock I just don't think this quite fits with the definition of the genre as I understand it and fits better under post-hardcore and slowcore which both existed contemporaneously with this.

Slowcore existed in the mid-late 80s whereas I've never seen anything pre-1990 labeled post-rock except for Talk Talk

I usually see this cited as one of the very first instances of post-rock but to me it seems more like a transitional moment, kind of like how Isn't Anything and Psychocandy get labeled as shoegaze even though only a few songs on each of them are really all that shoegazey.

These guys were from Kentucky though so could've been influenced by the likes of AMC or Galaxie 500

Isn't Anything I always felt was still pretty rooted in post-punk and wasn't quite hazy or layered enough, it was more of a transitional stage

Idk it's a pointless argument I guess, genres are just a construct.

The problem with terms like post-rock and shoegaze is that the terms themselves didn't pop up until the style had already been around for a good while so it's hard to say what the first instance of the style really was.

Isn't anything is definitely shoegaze. And I agree it's not silly to argue long as you're not big dicking or throwing punches. I don't know shit about post rock so this exchange was neat
