High Violet only has a couple really sad songs, whereas this and Boxer are their most depressing and least energetic overall.

Boxer is just their most heartbreaking (and best) to me, especially in the album's theme, and with songs like Apartment Story and Mistaken for Strangers.

High Violet is angrier and almost violent, but as far as like straight up sad, lyrically this album has quite a few moments that are just a walloping fucking black hole of despair. As for Boxer, I have some sad memories tied to that album anyways so.
But yeah, Don't Swallow The Cap, Fireproof, This is the Last Time, Hard To Find... oof

although this is starting to give it a run for its money, Boxer is also my favorite of theirs and imo the best

Can't be Boxer or even Alligator imo. In those at least he's going through all that shit but he's got his woman to make it all bearable. In HV he's trully all alone even with his wife and kids. In fact their presence makes it harder for him to cope.

The anxiety and despair in his voice in songs like Terrible Love, Afraid of Everyone and Conversation 16 is almost tangible!

Album Rating: 4.2
Afraid of Everyone and Sorrow are pretty depressing, but a lot of the rest of HV have a lot of their most energetic and uplifting material.
|
| |
i will admit Runaway and Conversation 16 are heartbreaking
but yeah stuff like Afraid of Everyone and Bloodbuzz are more wry and frustrated than depressing imo
