I know how they felt after Cliff passed but they were genuinely lucky to get a guy like Jason when they did. Getting a guy with that level of skill and that kind of attack on bass (just listen to Doomsday for the Deceiver and you'll see what I'm talking about) after losing a bassist like Cliff is a gargantuan opportunity that they then proceeded to waste.

yeah no doubt. the bass being cut out for all intents a purposes is another huge flaw on the production here. the songs/riffs/solos are some of their best, but the shitty sound and lack of a bass presence is unforgivable considering their stature at the time.

I'll probably bump it up to a 3 because it does have some virtues beyond the album that would follow it but not much beyond that.

other than an album or two, metallica has always been lacking bass after Cliff's passing

This deserves crap ratings for just the production alone.

^I can't really argue with that haha

But I could say similar things about James LaBrie who once was a great vocalist. His recent performances though ...

^ He does suck, though.

Used to play ok but nowadays it's like you're looking at a 5 year old child trying to learn how to play drums xD

And he's a greedy idiot. Couldn't care less about Lars Ulrich, tbh.
