I agree their debut is a bit overrated but far from a 3.

It's okay i guess, pretty decent but nowhere near the best on superunknown, goes to show how amazing that album is imo. The acoustic version that cornell does solo is better tbh.

okay I exaggerated but it's symbolic of the bad side of grunge for me - nonsense lyrics, monotone vocals and no real progression. the video is a classic but that's about it for me. unfortunately I feel the same about a whole bunch of Soundgarden's stuff, though they're also capable of classics

Black Hole Sun is basically a psychedelic Beatles tinged pop song recorded by a grunge band - it's good enough if overplayed

That and their other pop hit Blow Up the Outside World both have a Beatles thing going on, I don't think they're trying to be progressive on those songs at all. They're trying to write pop.

I don't really care about progressive, I care about interesting and that song is neither

Pretty Noose is how to do a grunge pop song - catchy as all hell but still got some kick to it

And then they have other songs that aren't poppy (in the same sense as Black Hole Sun) and have great progression such as Burden in My Hand and Spoonman.

True, they have plenty of good tunes like I said but every album of theirs has at least a handful of insufferably boring songs imo

I don't find Black Hole Sun or Blow Up the Outside World boring at all, they're really enjoyable. It's all about taste I guess.

I prefer Black Hole Sun to Pretty Noose - Noose sounds like a precursor to Cornell stepping out solo and I don't really dig that whole sound

I wish the band had really run with the whole Eastern vibe of songs like Head Down and Half for a whole album

Pretty Noose is okay. It's probably the most Chris Cornell sounding name for a song I've ever heard.

Cornell solo is awful but Pretty Noose has the whole band in one of their best grooves. Agreed the Shepherd songs were always the best
