I don't know why, but this album has really been doing it for me lately. To the point where I think it might be my favorite Death now. The solos/leads here are really something else.

Also, unrelated but I feel like Death's sound shifted substantially after this album

Yeah afterwards they maybe got a bit to proggy even tho the albums are still great. This album while still technical and prog still has a lot of that raw straightforward riffing the first 3 albums had the technicality isn't overdone. It's the perfect balance of the first few albums and the later shit

Whoops I thought I was in the ITP thread lol. This album is also in the running for my favorite Death though, but I think ITP is currently edging it out a bit.

But yea they definitely got a little more prog with ITP and then honestly with Symbolic I almost feel like there’s a distinct rock influence going on at times?

A lot of it just comes down to my daily mood though in terms of how I rank them truthfully

Actually while I’m on the topic, I’ve always wondered if the song Out of Touch signaled Chuck’s wanting to go in a different direction than death/extreme metal.

I remember reading an interview where he said that after ITP his perspective on music changed dramatically which would definitely tie into why Symbolic sounds so different.

And Chuck was bound by a record agreement to release TSOP with his current label under the band name Death. Had it not been for that agreement, that album may not have existed, and there would've been a Control Denied record instead

And anytime I'm reminded about Chuck's unfairly short life I'm absolutely gutted and can only wonder the possible music he could've created in the 2000s and onward

This! I can't even imagine how metal would have evolved if Chuck had stayed with us...

I've always wondered this too. Alot of people wanted more Death but forget that Chuck actually dissolved and retired Death in like 2000 I think. His full focus from hereon out was Control Denied, and some of those unreleased demos recorded right before his death are on YouTube. Ik he was supposed to record a side project with Dave Grohl. He also really wanted to do a Garage Inc.-styled cover album, according to EmptyWords.org

Yeah I actually like this more with age

I used to think it was just a middle ground album from Leprosy to Symbolc, but now I see the light
