i have no piercings and only one tooth filling but it's not metal thanks? :-p I mean given this band was never a real bm band before, it was nicely surprising to see them churn out an actual bm album out of nowhere, especially given the direction they had been going.

They definitely evolved with each album, I wouldn't say any of them are a part II of the previous. They may have taken it a little too far with Faustian Echos, which for me was good but falls short of the Agalloch "sound". Serpent was mediocre, so I really am hoping the next album will be a step up. I could go for another more BM tinged album.

Not too huge of a fan of this album. It's got some solid BM sections, but the drum sound is super grating and the last couple tracks are boooooooring. I definitely think that this band's folky stuff is much more affective than their BM stuff.

And yet you rated it a 4?

This album rules, but it's nowhere near their first three.

[3] This definitely seems to be their most controversial release. Aside from Into The Painted Grey, which is great, there isn't a whole lot of bm on here that isn't also on PF or Serpent. The middle songs are among their very best.

It's a shame how underrated this album is. Thinking of bumping my rating.

It's certainly not for everyone and a pretty big departure from what they had been doing for years before this, but it's an incredible album in its own right.

There's even more softer sections on here than on Ashes I would argue.

the production outside the drums is great. apparently it was done all on "vintage analog equipment" and it sounds like it. even if you can sort of replicate that on digital, it's cool.

It's a big departure but they certainly didn't jump the shark imo. It's a nice direction considering how they already explored bm/folk quite intensely (and did such a great job).

that might be true but the softer sections on ashes are sometimes pure vanilla unlike here

I meant that comment as a positive for this, but Ashes does have some amazing quiet parts like much of Fire Above, Ice Below and Our Fortress is Burning. Scars of the Shattered Sky also has some great parts.

This is tied with Pale Folklore as best Agalloch for me the more I think about it.
