if you grab only classic periods, i believe metallica has the best songwriting of the 4
Definitely.
Slayer don't even come close in terms of song writing imo.

Well everyone will have a different take on the Big 4, since everyone
has a different opinion. But overall, Ithink Slayer had a more
consistent run than 'Tallica. The fat that I'd rather hear SoH and SitA
than AFJA or TBA speaks for itself.
Having said that, the first 3 'Tallica records are all rock-solid imo, so I
might understand someone prefferring them to Slayer's first 3.

I'd say Megadeth and old Metallica are the real shit but then again I still need catching up with Anthrax, some say they ARE the real shit.
Even though Slayer play the "hey, I'm so dark and brooding" card, they are (of course) very talented musicians and it's safe to say they have been the most consistent.

Check Spreading the Disease if you haven't dude.

I was talking purely about song writing (although I do prefer early Metallica to Slayer overall actually).

always considered Metallica to be the most creative of the big 4 in terms of songwriting. They always seemed to be pushing the envelope.
|

In terms of lyrics yea, 'Tallica had better lyrics. Only 'Deth beat 'Tallica in that department imo.

Metallica were better songwriters than Megadeth imo (I'm not just talking lyrics).

Would agree. Metallica seemed to have a better way to layer their songs while Megadeth had a lot of ADHD song structures.

among the living > spreading the disease

"Only 'Deth beat 'Tallica in that department imo"
disagreed insanely hard there, danny
Welcome Home (Sanitarium) and The Thing That Should Not Be are some of my favourite lyrics of all time

"among the living > spreading the disease"
Other way around for me but whatever.
If we're talking song layering, then yes, 'Tallica did it best. And I'm not
their biggest fan on the site.

lol
early metallica clearly wins in terms of songwriting.
fade to black
master of puppets

= some of the most amazing songwriting in all of metal and those are just the "popular ones" so yeah sorry slayer/deth/anthrax, but no
