So much of this has got to be a result of age because to me WP is the nostalgia album, SNW is when I realized that I loved just about everything they've done, Diamond Eyes reignited my love for the band and arguably overtook WP, but then KNY was sort of DE-lite, and Gore was really the first time I was disappointed but it was still good.

"Sounds like the average for SNW should be a 4.5 then"
seems to me a bit low, but yeah it's preferable sure

Could definitely be, Sowing. I had obviously heard of Deftones before but Koi No Yokan was the newest album when I got into them. I had heard the singles from WP so much by that point that it wasn’t special to me anymore. Gore was the first “new” Deftones album that I was able to be hyped for and it exceeded my expectations at the time. I feel bands like Deftones that have been around so long have multiple generations of fans so favorites likely vary among them more than other bands

Great truth.
I was 23 when WP came out, it was also the first time I saw them live and holy shit man, it was smth special.

I think the initial appeal of DE was that after Chi's accident people expected them to fall off but it went the other way completely

This album is more than the sum of its parts. WP has amazing songs on it, but this as one complete album works better, in my opinion.

once this album gets the time and space to grow, it’ll be elevated almost to WP levels in due time

mainly because the changing of guards and how important this’ll seem in retrospect in the age of covid, I say
the kids today won’t care and have context of how digital bath changed the game but will also see how they took their time to craft this better than their last 4 albums.

Feel like this will max out at a 3.5 for me. It’s really solid but there’s nothing about this album that makes it particularly stand out in their discog, it doesn’t strike me as much different from DE/KNY, although it is better than the latter. S/T, SNW and DE are still safely my top three

Not bad! Middle tier Deftones.
