absence at the bottom is really the only one i take a super hard stance on. can understand any of the other 4 as a favorite depending on what you look for but that album has way too much tool bullshit on it and the push towards busier writing takes away from the spaciousness that made them feel so natural
like half of that album fucks tho

woah tool is cool

the only thing amazing about Tool is the drumming
Without Danny Carey they are simply mid

word - pretty amazing how quickly they mastered busier writing on this, tracks like Ghost Key and Threshold are slick as hell compared to the clusterfuck that is Not in Rivers while not any less ambitious structurally

yeah this albums absolutely a big improvement in that regard and integrates that stuff in much more tastefully. both of those tracks are seamless and threshold is maybe their top song for me

definitely too much unnecessary cluttering on Absence. It's impressive how dense yet focused this is, a clear upgrade in that regard

I mean that's just straight reductive and wrong lol
ITAOT gets a thumbs up from me for being unique despite the Carrey influence. Garden goes harder than like 90% of their catalog and it's the biggest offender.

Harris admits he overdid it with a bunch of new techniques he learned between Panop and Absence, but I don't mind it since it's confined to one album. gives it something to stand apart.

Most of what Sumac has done is either on par with this or is weaker.

I consider Oceanic - Panopticon - Wavering Radiant Isis trifecta albums
|
| |
I consider that to be their first 3

nah that trifecta is accurate, and then Celestial stands alone
|

Trifectas have to be in order sorry no skipping albums

Re-listened to this over the past two days. I like the psych colors that are brought in, some of the other experimentation, I think they were really trying to expand the palate. I think the reason I rank it somewhat lower than previous two is the songwriting just isn't quite as good. Still solid, though, wouldn't want to be without it.
