5th favorite Metallica for me, and the only one that can stand up to the first four imo

rip. album is very mixed for me. i bought it the day it came out and was seething with hype, but i wasn't listening to it a month later. i like the first half of NEARLY every song ("the judas kiss" sucks major dong), but after about the 4 minute mark, i start scratching my head wondering why they're just noodling around. why does every song need to be 8 minutes long??? and most of kirk's solos flatout suck here. some are good, but most aren't.
like, "that was just your life" has me going 'why is this not a Metallica classic???' but then it just keeps going, and going, and going, and going! and i say 'oh, this is why.' and then "the day that never comes" is just diet "one" mixed with "fade to black" lite.
"unforgiven 3" is my fave song here, partially because it's probably the most original sounding song on the album, even though it's ironically a sequel. but it sounds nothing like the first two.

literally how bro, that song is so wonky, so jumbled. that main riff is metallica going "let's be prog" and they proceed to write one of the goofiest riffs they've ever composed. WAAAAh dun dun WAHHHHH dun dun dundundundund

Put All Nightmare Long in the setlist you cowards [2]
idk why they refuse to play it. pretty popular song and not overly technical i think.

it gets overstated but the mix really is bad and does hold it back slightly for me

yeah mix holds it back but there’s a few songs here that are WAY TOO LONG… just way too fucking long
Judas Kiss, Unforgiven III, and Suicide and Redemption are the worst offenders and I just really don’t like Broken Beat and Scarred.
Cut down Suicide and Redemption and Judas Kiss and replace the other two with Hate Train and Hell and Back (or literally any of Beyond Magnetic for that matter) and then we’re fuckin cooking

Lol every post 2000 Metallica song is too long, not just on this record

"idk why they refuse to play it. pretty popular song and not overly technical i think."
in 2025 i think it might be tbh
they seem to have retired playing most songs with intricate picking patterns besides like puppets, creeping death, battery, sometimes blackened etc. and even then james is taking a lot of liberties with those in live videos the past few years.
most of the songs on this album have pretty lengthy arrangements that'd take a lot rehearsal to get down again (and why "cyanide" became the token dm song to play the last 15 years). just too much work to relearn when they could just pull out "hoiler than thou" or something and get a way bigger reaction
with that being said i'm very surprised they've only performed unforgiven 3 a total of 10 times given both how simple and popular it is on streaming. that one doesn't even have the b-bender excuse 2 does.

yeah it also grinds my gears that I prefer all four songs on Beyond Magnetic to like half this album. How “Rebel of Babylon” and “Hate Train” got cut astounds me. I really really wanna sit in on the meeting where they said “yeah, end of the line is way better than rebel of babylon.”
|
| |
hate train rules but i def understand that one getting cut. lots of pitch correction on james's voice in the chorus on that one
