Metalheads are what helped propel this to cult status, and I feel like most people dabble in other pop but gravitate back to the cream of the crop

People thinking that this is the "cream of the crop" is exactly the problem I'm talking about
|
| |
"My problem is less that people like this album and more that people listen to this and then never listen to any other pop ever"
I mean this is still an excellent pop record, but yes the whiff of exceptionalism around CRJ is a rough fume (esp on her subsequent output)

Yup, exactly, this album is great but there is so much other good pop out there

Idk, man. I don't give into hating on artists because of their fans in any other genre, so I don't really know why I would start here. Posers listen to CRJ? Oh god no, please no.

"Yup, exactly, this album is great but there is so much other good pop out there"
This can be said for any artist/genre/band. It all comes down to opinions in the end anyway.
|
| |
I have less of an issue with CRJ being the only pop artist a lot of people buy into in and of itself than with the way that correlates with her aggressively unconditional/needy girl next door persona
Nothing wrong with that on her end - it's her schtick and she's played it well - but the number of female pop artists whose image is either more nuanced or more overtly promiscuous that get rolled over in her favour leaves a rly bad taste for me given the stank malegazing str8boi cohort that tends to push for her as the pop One
|
| |
or if you want to go down to meme takes, she is to basic pop what Bjork is to experimental pop, and you can have a fair discussion about how badly many of advocates of either artist fail to represent either within their milieu without diminishing them based on their own v obvious merits

Honestly 100% agreed Johnny. It feels like idol culture

This definitely got its flowers for being above-average pop but I do think it's blown out of proportion a tad, moreso its odd that this seems to be THE pop album that gets talked about in context of the last decade of pop music

personally don't mind that people love this, just wish they would give other women in pop a chance (?
|

YES!! Exactly!
Just to be clear I would give this a 4, maybe even a 4.5? I definitely like it. It's just not the only pop album

Still not this album’s fault, but yes, listen to other artists. I was always in support of that. Idk.

y’all are a bunch of dorks looking way too far into it lmao it’s just very infectious, very innocuous, very accessible pop music made by someone whose persona isn’t outwardly contentious, provocative, or otherwise disagreeable. this has always been the basic formula for garnering popularity beyond the confines of one’s genre.
