Zak's point is they weren't a 90s band even if technically they were.

It's just when Johnny defines what the 90s were and you're sitting there going 'no one listened to them in the 90s!' that's where you sort of go 'nah' - not that these bands are bad, they just were championed and listened to after the decade wrapped up. It's why they don't register as part of the 'sound of the decade' because they weren't played, held up or talked about then.

I mean Spoon were a 90s band believe it or not, had two or three albums, but I'll be fooked if anyone will ever convince me anyone gave a shit about them until the mid 00s

yeah but what has that got to do with whether one album released in the 90's is better than another album released in the 90's. Also, I was completely fucking amazed no-one knew Modest Mouse when I saw them in the UK touring Good News because they were well established in the US indie scene.

it doesn't, that wasn't the discussion - just saying no one considers them a 90s band, they're a 2000s band through and through, that's when 99% of their fanbase discovered 'Lonesome' retrospectively.

fogza - there's being established and there's people thinking you had a top 10 indie album of the decade, that's huge. At the time people did not regard that album anything like that, no way.

the discussion started when someone said you'd be hard pressed to find a better 90's alt rock album than the bends.

"anyone who claims 90s Cave was short on musical ideas knows dick all about good arrangements"

He always writes the most simple and overused melodies and then doesn't do anything interesting with them what do you mean?

Take it with a pinch of salt fog mate, it’s a broad term meant to exemplify that the internet was not in mass everyday use like it has been since the early 2000s.

The internet was a very limited tool from ‘97-99.

Very very bare bones.

Music print and MTV alternative would far and away have been the media to go to for the up and coming stuff.

doof's insistence that this entire conversation is viewed through the lens of whichever distribution and discussion circuits he was closest to at whichever time is one of the plummest examples of sput pseudposting i've seen in my days

and still doesn't change the fact that the Bends had and has shit all over the US 90s lofi greats

"He always writes the most simple and overused melodies and then doesn't do anything interesting with them what do you mean?"

relisten to Henry's Dream/Let Love In in their entirety, electrocute yourself every time anything happens in the string accompaniment and you'll start to feel like a slightly more frazzled version of everyone else with a working set of ears who has ever heard those records

The website that actually demonstrated what the internet was capable of for marketing purposes and how it had come on leaps and bounds was the official Harry Potter site 2001ish.

I went to university between 1998 and 2001 and we were never advised to or indeed used the internet for studying - still the library.

There were these very basic chatrooms you’d see people using and people would download pornographic pictures and the like.

Just about adapting to mobile phones at that point :D

And in a lovely way to bring it back to this album, it was upon revisiting uni mates that I first listened to this when it came out.

I thought it was absolute turd. Complete bobbins.
