My BIL's brother (cousin-in-law?) finally gave their discography a listen after I had suggested it to him months ago. For reference, his favorite group is Dance Gavin Dance, FFDP...stuff like that. He told me he gave them a full 6 hour, all-day listen. "Heavier than I thought" was his primary opinion. He mentioned that he likes more dynamism in the vocals (i.e., mixture of cleans and harsh) in bands he likes so I can imagine most of Meshuggah was tough for him. I gave him a lot of kudos for giving them a full listen and told him that it'd be worth catching them live if he was ever interested. Told him I'd pull myself out of retirement and go to a gig with him if the group comes somewhere nearby.

I recommended Bleed's self-titled as a way to get back into his good graces. You talk to folks like this and it's like coaxing a stray cat to come inside your house. If you're too aggressive with your suggestions then they scurry behind the bushes again. Textures is a good suggestion although he made mention of Meshuggah's lengthier tracks so I figured he needed a palette cleanser with clean vocals and 3-4 minute song lengths.

Just play this on repeat until the groove infects the brain folds and then he'll never look back
(Worked for me anyway 😜)

I've given this a few more listens and while it's clicking a little more than it used to i still have to put this one toward the bottom of their discog. Not having live drums also takes it down a peg for me but i will say the programmed drums are very well done and dont bother me like they do in most cases. Only certain parts where i can kinda really tell they're programmed

Thats probably only like a -0.1 for me though since the programmed drums still sound great. I mostly just dont find this as interesting as their other albums but ive been really trying to go into it with the mindset thats it's a kinda different beast from their other albums

No album grooves top to bottom like this one does to me. They just ride the wave
