Agree with that entire take, actually. Velouria deserved a better album.

"is it blasphemous to call this their best? this is like raw uncut space grunge"
I prefer Surfer Rosa, but this is a totally cool choice for favorite
It's a very unique and engaging album, but the Doolittle worshippers always hate on it cuz it's a polar opposite pivot despite no real decrease in quality
worst thing i could say about this album is that Santo should've gone in place of Stormy Weather, and maybe the Kim backups could've been mixed higher, but other than that, it's ace

blandest + most bougie of the og pixies albums by a significant margin. The Happening thru to the end is a decent run if you ignore Stormy Weather but the songwriting is so much flabbier than on Doolittle (Trompe was a p notable step up in that regard)

yeah Trompe stomps this album. I can't believe how bland/bad these guys are now

Bossanova is just a different vibe in its entirety. The comparisons to Doolittle just feel misplaced.
And I'd say the best run on this album is absolutely Rock Music-Ana with the weak points being All Over the World and Stormy Weather. Dig for Fire, Down to the Well, and Blown Away being great songs in the 2nd half and the rest being pretty good to great.
Trompe was absolutely trying to be Doolittle again, so of course people who think Doolittle is easily is their best are going to say it's better than Bossanova. I like Trompe but it's easily my least favorite of the original 5 (Pilgrim included) because it feels the least original even if the songs are still great. It's definitely the kind of album that comes out when a band is on the verge of breaking up
" I can't believe how bland/bad these guys are now"
That I agree with. Haven't heard the latest 2, but Indy Cindy and Head Carrier are both so bad and the singles from Beneath the Eyrie (didn't bother with the whole thing) weren't much better

dude Stormy Weather is dope as fuck, that tempo change is the shit.
Doolittle has some really fuckin annoying songs, this record they’re more sophisticated and the production is better. Pretty sure joey said this is his fav pixies record because of its guitar sound, and he’s right, the spacey surfer tone here is perfect
I haven’t given surfer a listen in a while, but I remember being lukewarm to it and its production

Doolittle and SR are their best by a pretty wide margin
