Well, I like black metal like Burzum and Darkthrone. I just can't get into Emperor or Mayhem because it feels like the same song over and over (and Mayhem's shitty vocals).

I've been meaning to listen to more black metal.

"Ugh. I love the individual songs on this, but I can't stand listening to the whole album because it just sounds like one long song. There's almost no diversity."

...welcome to metal.

black metal is all about the repetition

True, but I have a feeling his distaste is, as with most people, more due to the uniform production than it is to the variety in the songs themselves. Most metal (and this album is a prime example) employs the exact same production and instrumentation throughout the entire album in order to force the listener to pay more attention to the song structures, which actually do vary a lot. This runs opposite to the approach of 90% of more popular forms of music.

All the songs on a metal album sound the same at first, but once you get past that certain point, you start to see the immense amount of dynamism and variation that really does exist in the songs themselves, not the sounds. The side effect being that all that other music starts to sound similar instead, haha.

Darkthrone is much less diverse than Emperor is. If you like them then there's really no reason for you to not like this.

Of course. Really though I don't know if it's just me, but I'm pretty sure is much more diverse and a lot less repetitive than Darkthrone.

Yeah it's definitely in a good way, I'm just saying if you like Darkthrone you should probably like Emperor too. That's just me though.

Well if you need something similar to that then I would recommend any of Agalloch's 3 full length albums and also To the Nameless Dead by Primordial.

Well listen to Myrkgrav too. That's another band in the same vein as Agalloch, Ulver, and Primordial. Great stuff.
