I do like Load quite a lot.

Reload is so poor I feel I need to do justice to St Anger and return to see if it's at least more interesting.

I wouldn't revisit either. St. Anger has one, maybe two decent tracks but that's not enough in the whole record's scope.

IMO Load and Reload combined have about 10 songs at least on par with the self titled but the former gets bonus points for Until It Sleeps, which clears most of the black album.

I love when people say 'if you put the best ten songs between Load and Reload together you'd have a classic album' because I would only add one song from Reload (at most) to the best songs from Load.

The one song would be 'Fixxxer'...beyond that 'Where the Wild Things Are' is passable but I don't think it makes the cut!

Yeah, Reload adds just 1-2 songs to the sum. For me it's Unforgiven Too and The Memory Remains, Fixxxer is okay but didn't have me hooked like those two. Most good tracks come from Load - Until It Sleeps, Mama Said, Ain't My Bitch, King Nothing, Cure, Wasting My Hate, the "something something Me" songs and the closer all cut it.

Apparently they got their first #1 billboard place with this album. Congrats to them.

“I mean all that is great but Metallica's still the stronger songwriters”

holy shit it's such a fucking bad take it actually hurts me [2]

Put me in the camp of Metallica is mostly dogshit. Even their classics are lame. I simply cannot get into that band. If anything they were the most commercially successful but I sure wouldn’t call them better. I mean Lars is actually embarrassing

Someone not liking Metallica is cool. We don't like all bands. Saying someone has a "bad take" for Calling one of the highest regarded metal bands better songwriters than another band is just pure laughable sputnik ignorance tho. All the iconic bands actually suck it's a bad take bro

Speaking of: two biggest trash bands in trash barely have game anymore, meanwhile the one and only Turbo absolutely obliterates them with the last album that nobody talks about abroad

So an artist being highly regarded = better songwriters? Or do they just have more mass appeal? I understand that typically “highly regarded” in a metal scene is different than say pop music, but Metallica are a more commercialized metal band in my opinion. Even if they didn’t start that way. Also you didn’t compare their songwriting chops to metal at large but an arguably equally important metal act

Metallica's songwriting in the 80's was by far the best of any metal band. They created thrash in Kill 'm All, then pioneered progressive into thrash with Ride and Master, then introduced groove metal in Justice. Most metal bands starting in the late 80's and 90's were directly influenced by Metallica. Mikael Akerfeldt credits Orion and To Live is to Die as catalysts for inspiration and Dino Cazares wanted to create a band that sounded like the double kick part in One. Even Fenriz dug 80's Metallica. All down to their songwriting and shows.

I’m not in any way arguing against their relative impact on both society and musicians alike. I just don’t know that I can classify them as all time best songwriters (and better than Megadeth) just because they were hugely significant and a part of pioneering new subgenres (also not arguing that that isn’t a feat in and of itself). To me they have always had peers that did it better. But defining “better songwriting” I guess is also subjective to a degree so to each their own.

Defo. Im just standing up for their songwriting. Megadeth too had (way) above average songwriting

dave never got enough credit for the transition to the radio considering how complex their older stuff is. countdown, youthanasia and cryptic writings are all great albums with so many killers hooks while still maintaining some technicality. that's a huge credit to songwriting.

Metallica's first 4 albums crush Megadeth's yup. I agree correct opinion lol.

Rust in peace is great tho I'll give props where it's due. Megadeth isn't my favorite give me Sodom, kreator, slayer, sepultura and especially Metallica when it comes to thrash. Megadeth isn't anywhere near my top 20 metal bands in general or anything of that nature. But good band. It's all subjective
