Personally I think this one is really front-loaded. Tracks 1-6 are like an easy 5 to me.

Souvenir is like Pompeji but written with tempest woven into it throughout and that pointless outro could have been cut, just like on Pompeji. And it comes off as a lesser version of those songs as well imo.

Yeah Locked Club is underrated. My only real gripe is there's a weak ending. I don't care for Metal Dream the chorus is very forgettable and Departing the Body is just alright, kinda drags and it nowhere near touches some of their other album closers.

But damn those other 9 songs are incredible.

This is good stuff. Not blowing me away, but still really solid.

Abe's drumming on this record is particularly tight and precise, and the production allows each hit to shine

It unravels more and more with each listen, milk of the madonna was a great pick for a single because it really is probably the most immediately lovable song here but I’m liking it more and more with each listen… very tentatively I’d say it’s probably my fourth favorite record they’ve done, which is incredibly impressive considering they’ve been a band for damn near 40 fucking years

And yes Abe is fucking phenomenal but when is he not? Despite them being at the peak of their popularity I’d still say he’s incredibly underrated. One of my favorite drummers ever

That's an insane take for me lol. MOTM, Metal Dream and Departing are my top 3 songs from this album.

Metal dream in particular has probably the best chorus Chino has written in a decade and Departing is such a moody, pulsating number, it's a perfect closer for the album

Current top 3 are probably ecdysis, locked club and departing the body

The back half is a 5/5, along with infinite source. the spoken word parts shook me… that’s pretty much the last thing I expected from Chino but it was damned effective

Might be my fave drum sound they've had on a record, it's very similar to KNY but way more punchy and full and Abe kills it as usual, he always writes for the song and it complements everything so much.

Also does cXz really remind anyone of RatsRatsRats? That song has really grown on me I hated it at first, the section at 2:05 is now one of my fave parts of the record.

Departing the body, like many other Deftones closers before it, feels kinda anti-climactic and just not strong enough for a closer. I mentioned earlier in the thread: Deftones are phenomenal with openers, but a little weak on their closers — pink maggit, rivière and fireal being the exceptions. Rubicon is decent. But Moana, this place is death, what happened to you and to a lesser extent departing the body are all relatively weak compared to the stronger tracks on each album.

I do appreciate the spoken word verses on departing the body, definitely a first for them. And it’s decent, but I agree that it kinda drags and doesn’t go anywhere (again, anti-climactic). But maybe it’ll continue to grow on me.

Metal dream is a top 3 track for me, only tracks I like more are infinite source, maybe milk and ecdysis. Dunno, those are all pretty tied for me at the top. Infinite is the only clear front runner imo.
