Finally came around to listen to this. Songwriting is truly innovative, production is pristine, everyone is at the top of their game. The album oozes a somber atmosphere and Mikael‘s growling is placed very tastefully, what great piece of work, will grow on me a lot for sure.

As you can see judging from my past history and ratings with Opeth, I'm always hopeful that an album comes through. I give time and patience to so much music and albums like this just keep me pondering to a point that I get pissed off. It's the choices to mix such hodge-podge ideas together that gets me to a 1.5 rating. If you're going to mimic your idols, do it with some style. It's like Opeth takes all the things I love about prog and stretches it razor thin. Even the production on this lacks punch making the weak music sound like an echo. Then you add a few sparing growls into the mix to just say, "See, I've gone back to my roots" and you begin to see the bullshit bands like this are truly made of. This is why I shake my head at peoples tastes because they lack the skills/ knowledge of what makes a great song stick.
