Voivod, thanks for that Malady mention, checking out their latest release, it's right up my alley

"Like, style-wise, my favourite Opeth stuff is the first 3 albums, and it always will be. But those albums are incredibly messy. There’s a difference between inspiration and skill..." (2)
Nailed it.
I'm an early Opeth fan (actually), yet I would never attempt to claim those albums were flawlessly composed or performed. I just love the vibe, the atmosphere, the sheer scope and ambition of what they attempted.
It's a whole other (wider) discussion, but the relationship between outlandishness and uniqueness, engaging with the listener despite obvious flaws and the eventuality (for some artists) of harnessing your skill or 'refinement' is an interesting one.

What Nupeth needs is more METAL. Not just growls.

I will say that the production on this is legitimately very decent. The punchier rhythmic segments sound especially great

the opener and 5 are probably the best songs on here, but everything else is really great, a huge step up from the slogfest of the past 10ish years. settling on a 4 for now with room for improvement
Also, totally random comparison without any additional context, but I like this more than Closure / Continuation

Closure / Continuatuon was pretty boring though, so that's not a high bar. Any Opeth album is better, even Sorceress

S5 is s tier opeth

Can’t get into this at all, it’s a nonsense

I found this one to be pretty dense and it wasn't till after a few listens was I able to form a better opinion of it, but yeah, digging this one a lot. I think it's a step in the right direction for Opeth and I plan on spending a lot more time with this one

I haven't given this album enough listens yet but the concept and direction are excellent. I don't just mean the legal document framing device, I mean the sense that it's a 70s prog album that happens to have heavy parts. The trim runtime is also refreshing, the whole thing feels packed with ideas.

imma be honest this one just isn't for me.

They are my favorite as well. Morningrise is my favorite Opeth album, followed by MAYH, but what they are doing here is also pretty great and worth some time in my rotation for sure.

Another great album by Opeth. Personally i cant get into anything they did before Damnation, so i was getting worried about critics proclaiming the new album would be a return to their late 90s sound. Thank god, it was all fake news. Damn critics. Why do we need them?
Favorite tracks: Paragraphs 6 and 7. So far.

Finally gave the new one a listen.
It's not top tier Opeth of yore, but it's pretty fun

This gets better with each listen, production-wise it could be one of their best.

the critics are probably refering to My Arms, Your Hearse as some of that Demon of the fall rhythmic sensibility is present here

Halfway through a first run and I gotta echo the others here: I can feel the neuron activation happening but I'm not quite sure why so I'm gonna have to spend a lot more time with it.
If the ending track on this one is as disappointing as the ending track for Damnation then I'm gonna be sad
