PJ Harvey has always been a folk songwriter even when she's leaned into a rock palette; White Chalk and her latest both make this particularly obvious

Michigan most enjoyable, C&L most convincing end-to-end, Impossible Soul if you want to treat yourself like you deserve and not bother with any whole album

yeah, I pretty much agree with you johnny, esp her stuff after the mid '90s
I just never had her down as 'folk' in my mind I guess, I think I had her as 'variants of rock music' based on her earlier stuff

interesting point, do people consider blues a subset of folk music, or so unique it transcends its folk origins? i'd say harvey's rockier stuff leans deeply into an almost alternative blues format

Interesting line of thought I still don’t quite understand where the boundaries of folk start/end especially if you’re going beyond contemporary western folk

well my list I excluded (as Boney pointed out) 'country' for the most part (Molina and other are also close to country but I'd still say more 'folk' overall) and also I didn't add any 'world musicians' (yup, I hate the term too but it's still the easiest catch all term).
So artists like Gurrumul or Salif Keita would also be very high up on the list and are effectively 'folk musicians'.

Carrie and Lowell is my favorite indie acoustic album ever. I haven't really listened to much else this dude has done, except for Age of Adz (didn't like that one on release, but that was over 10 years ago). Hopefully this will make me listen to more of his stuff, I enjoy the bare bones singer-songwriter shtick on C&L, but judging from just the covers alone I assume I can't expect that from the rest of his back catalogue. This has okay levels of other stuff going on, I dig it

I've been wondering that myself, but since I'm not a critic I can neither answer the question or come up with more appropriate terminology.
I generally find trying to lump artists into specific genres quite confining and often unnecessary, other than for the ease of having a conversation. In the case of "indie" I feel like it's never even been a genre and I do strongly dislike lumping artists that have almost nothing alike together, dunno why I even used it tbh.
Lol this is what you get for replying to a Colton I guess, making me look like a schizo out here

yes it is because i am a horrible person and the problem is entirely me for asking how people define indie nowadays

What’s the reasoning with it?
I did check the Yeule thread for the first time in about a week and it looked like some sort of feeding frenzy so I passed on adding anything there
|
| |
i am basically public enemy #1 and everyone writes me long diatribes about how awful of a person i am cause i made a shitpost about hacking the site
|

see yeule thread for said diatribes

humour not translating well here is a thing that can happen
only the most stubborn users here will hold a grudge about something for over 6 months so you can just not mention it - what I'd recommend if you genuinely want to just forget it
99% of my interaction with you have been about music opinion so I've not really got any skin in this game either way, I don't get upset about differing music opinions now (might not have been able to fully say that when I first arrived here but you live and learn) and yeah, we've just talked about music
|
| |
i don’t mention it i just come here to talk about music and everyone perpetually whines about it lol

The best two steps are: stick to mostly positive threads, ignore bait
Like I said I don't know your full sput rap sheet but if you want a more peaceful period of time here that's a good start
I've taken a few breaks from the place and I post most 'content' elsewhere because most other sites have a more 'positive' spin on contributions and take stuff 'in the spirit intended' more often
I've liked coming back here recently though so I'm not shitting on the place

no like literally wherever I comment they get wiped and I get the angry rants
|
| |
I could say “I think this is a good album” and my comments will get wiped and 3 people will write paragraphs about how I’m a piece of shit. it is genuinely comical but I’m concerned for these people
