Should clarify I didn't mean weird in a bad way, still not really sure how I feel about it but it gives the music a lot more character and I agree it fits pretty well for what she's going for.

This is my take on it:
* Things like Spotify didn't exist, so it was radio and CDs for many people
* She appealed as much to modern rock and grunge as she did top 40 radio
* She was coming about during a rise in empowered women (see: Lilith Fair, Shania Twain, Spice Girls)
* She's conventionally attractive and therefore marketable
* CDs sales were really about to hit their stride, this near to the peak of "buying CDs" (1994-2006) and music in general never sold more annually than during that period
* The album is, contrary to your opinion, pretty good. Songwriting is great, it's emotional, and each song is catchy and memorable.
