"nah u can listen to half an album and give up. do you think you have to complete a game or a book to rate it?"
yes?
of course completing a game is a bit of a nebulous concept, im not talking about 100%ing a fucking open world game or anything, but yeah.

"yes?"
Nah. There has to be a minimum level of engagement to want to finish something and if the thing can't create that, you absolutely can rate it based on that.

About halfway through this now and I'm definitely getting more of an 00s metalcore vibe than anything that brings me back to classic era In Flames. It's not terrible but my impression so far is that this is going to be a one and done listen

It's both. It's a little metalcore with some nods to the classic riffage as well

I don't think listening to a handful of songs one or two times is enough to rate an album. If that were the case I'd have a ton of 1s in my rankings. I don't like country music. If I listen to a country album for 3 minutes and know I'm not going to like it, I think it'd be unfair to just drop a 1 on that. I'd rather move on and leave unrated if I'm not digging something initially.

I disagree. If you want to give something a low rating you have to suffer for it.

Wanted to give this the fair chance it deserved by giving it 4 or 5 full listens. Some of it I enjoy a lot, the drumming is awesome, the production is great, and I'm digging the more guitar forward approach. All of the lyrics are abysmal, some of the clean vocals are obnoxious but not as bad as everyone makes them out to be. It's a good album, probably better than the last three, but I feel like it's kinda on par with something like A Sense of Purpose, which I think is a super underrated newer album. I feel like it's a bit of a redemption album for them based on how poorly received the last few albums have been, but it's hardly a return to anything pre-Clayman. A lot of these solos also sound very out of place. Broderick is an excellent lead player, but a lot of what he's doing on this doesn't mesh well for me. That's not to say it's all bad there are some very powerful melodic leads on here that really do the trick for me. Foregone Pt.1 and The Great Deceiver are great melodeath songs. Some of the big choruses are also great in songs like Bleeding Out, Pure Light of Mind, In the Dark, A Dialogue in B Flat Minor, etc. So many of the verses throughout though are pretty boring and generic, so it creates a weird dichotomy for me. Overall it's an enjoyable album, and I feel like if they can keep the momentum going with this new lineup they could definitely be on the upward swing of things.

it's a very good modern In Flames album, I think it got lost in their middle era

I think the implication was that it should be something you at least went into intending to listen to in full, made an effort to but felt so unengaged by that you turned it off part way through. I don't think putting on an album you expect to hate, listening to one song or less and rating is a very honest reading of what I was getting at.

you can rate albums how you want pizzabear, but as you said insta 1ing something you know you aren't going to like doesn't add a lot of value to the site

I think you guys are taking ratings a bit too seriously. If I dislike something, I'll throw a rating on it if I want to. If I was to write a review for something, obviously that's different.
