3. He's a Technical Death Metal Drummer. Most Tech Death Drummers need that variety for their style. Dave is in a Thrash Metal band, which does not need as much of that
So just because Flo is in a death band, its required that he's more varied? And Dave can get away with being less varied because he plays in thrash? This isnt really a valid point; Flo is one of the few death drummers who incorporate alot of jazz influence into their playing, and I'm fairly confident he was one of the first. The only one I can imagine being otherwise was Martin Lopez of Opeth.

I was just wondering where Tomas Haake out of Meshuggah would fit into this as he could be used as a good example of a thrash drummer able to play a very varied style, although some people don't really consider Meshuggah thrash.

I'm not sure thats a valid point, as most modern DM drummers use either complex jazz timings or rythems incorperated with Blast beats to achieve that Death metal soundThis Message Edited On 04.07.07

if you can name others aside from the former Opeth drummer and Flo, I'd like to hear them. I know of only those 2.

To the jazz drumming question, Brann Dailor, Sean Reinhart and I believe Ben Koller does. The Dillenger escape plan drummer does too. This Message Edited On 06.03.07

He better be. Roddy should pull his head out of his ass and play something besides really fast blast beats.

Flo is still better, and Dave is basically just a straight thrash drummer. He might have been more innovative for his time, but his playing hasn't evolved with metal drumming in general, where as Flo may not have innovated anything for his time, but has certainly done better to keep his drumming fresh. In conclusion, Mastodon is still hella boring and their second guitarist has the worst hair ever. The end.

This took ages to grow on me.

But damn, Slayer have still got it. Flesh Storm, Jihad and Cult are three of the band's best songs since Seasons era.
