In Rainbows or The Bends are the best starting points

telling someone to start at the bends is like suggesting they furnish their home from scratch from a recycling dump, yikes

The Bends or OKC, anything else would be weird. I guess IR is another good one.
Wow AMSP came out almost 7 years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if Radiohead are basically done, and maybe this project will essentially take its place going forward. It really doesn't sound all that different from Radiohead, especially HTTT.
Thin Thing is good but far from the best on here. Work in Television and Tomorrow Brings are out of place and probably my least favorites.

that's why it feels like such a copout, they're obviously still making Radiohead music they just don't want the name to be attached to it so they can make worse stuff and people will be like "oh well it's not really Radiohead"

Johnny just because you don't like something doesn't make it trash baby, just your taste

If you're talking about the synthesis of this project, it came out of Thom and Jonny wanting to make more music but the other Radiohead band members wanted to do other things or something like that. Honestly all respect due to those other guys, but Jonny and Thom together with some other guy sounds pretty fully fledged Radiohead in a lot of places to me; not quite as brilliant as most of their albums, but not too far off either. I love HTTT too and Radiohead is my favorite band so I'm probably biased.

it is not a hot take to claim that the bends/pablo is probably the most misrepresentative snapshot of radiohead as a whole, other than maybe tkol
also
"If I like the darker, moodier cuts from this, what Radiohead album should I start with?"
lol

Ok I agree, but what if said person liked more grungy/guitar heavy music, you want them to dive into OKC or listen to Bends first?

Airbag created grunge - they'd cope with OKC

starting to change my mind on this mmm
i much prefer this drummer to phil thingy whats his name
i like thom's vox with more attitude and the songs a little more experimental and clangy, never work on tv is really fun
but i think free in the knowledge is a bit tacky, kinda throwback, they can be beautiful without being campfire if they really wanna
i hope the smile amass like 50 b-sides in no time

From somebody who has almost all of the Radiohead albums 5'd lol, I don't know why this has never truly grabbed me enough to love it

*The run from Pana-vision to Free in the Knowledge is the best.

Yeah Pana-vision sounds straight from AMSP, and Free in the Knowledge is a very nice acoustic ballad with strings.

Ehhh not feeling this stuff at all unfortunately, it's pretty boring for these guys' standards. Not having Colin and Phil on the rhythm section hurts the Radiohead sound, which is what this feels like it wants to be

I had no idea there were so many other songs they've done and only played live. Hope they come out with another album soon.

Recent forced myself into Radiohead by doing a walk-through of RYM's top 20. Out of OK, Kid A, and Rainbows, Kid A is definitely my favorite.
Also, that's a shame that you think "Free in the Knowledge" is the worst track. Hands down my favorite track from the entire year of 2022.
