If we're going for comparisons, I think Whipping Boy is a big influence on the new one.

I also really like the tracks Bug and Sundowner.
They are up there with their best.

Very, very impressed with the new one.

@doof
I think ‘In the Modern World’ is one of the best songs on it.
Album is an absolute blinder. Amazing.

zak, 'In the Modern World' is secretly my second favourite yeah, only two songs I '5 rated' straight away are 'Starburster' and that one.
Album is a 4.5 and still keeps that trademark moody undercurrent beneath the gloss...at the moment I'd still rate the two previous higher but that could change.
Have read a lot of people saying the whole album should have sounded like the last song but that would have been too Bloc Party for me, decent as a one off tune though.

I’m having it as one of the best of the last few decades.
I waited for the thing to finish before going into work yesterday as I was that impressed by it on the first listen.
Gone in and out of it this morning and it’s likely a 5 so it is.

Not ruling out the 5 but there’s about four tunes on it I’d need to warm to a fair bit for that to happen

new one is great, bit of a late 90s Blur vibe on stuff like Bug. glad I didn't listen to any singles beforehand, because I definitely would've wanted the whole thing to sound like Starburster

Yeah definitely a bit of Blur going on, Depeche Mode is in there as well and a fair whack of modern pop.
Album is an outstanding achievement.

They've transformed into an arena act about as gracefully as anyone could reasonably expect. Fair play to them.
|

Let it be known that In The Modern World is fucking amazing.

Still kind of crazy they're playing arenas now, it'll be interesting to see how well it translates.

zak, I think 'Modern World' is the most impressive song here is some ways because it's the hardest to produce that type of song in 2024 without making it sound too generic/sappy/unrepresentive
against all the odds, it rings true to them, doesn't feel like a compromise

Yep that is a very true mate

I quite like how they dipped into dream pop on Hero's, almost totally abandoned it on Skinty apart from Roman Holiday then fully came back and embraced it on the new one, their evolution is always so satisfying

It's funny to think back to the debut where really I'd have classed them as closest to a punk band, even ahead of a 'post punk' band - they've changed totally from that but still the same 'voice' and 'feel' to what they put out. Already close to a classic 'canon' band in the traditional sense imo

Album Rating: 4.5
They started as a pretty meat and potatoes post punk band, they've never been afraid to push their sound forwards
