starting to really appreciate the quieter moments here and that's a good sign. could very well end up being my AOTY

right now I can't imagine this not being my AOTY
my favorite moment is probably the moment in Cicada II that I quoted + the immediate hit afterwards
but the reprise at the end of Maple Tree and basically the entire second half of In Medias Res gives it a run for its money

almost every song with the exception of the Overture has a …fuk moment

i wish this was more widely known so I could engage in wild speculative discussion about how the story will end
my current unlikely tinfoil is that the alchemist is Future June

i feel like he'd have to be from the past. his goal is to bring his brother back to life, right? so i think he's viewing the future ("I scry their tale to quicken mine") and that June will find some way to save July

i'm still mind boggled by how good the production on this is versus how small this band is

True
|
| |
I’ll give it that, but the singer makes up for it by being some bum picked up from ye local coffee house sipping chai latte and dreaming about corn
|
| |
most offensive part of that take is the chai latte slander

"i feel like he'd have to be from the past. his goal is to bring his brother back to life, right? so i think he's viewing the future ("I scry their tale to quicken mine") and that June will find some way to save July"
it all depends on what's metaphor and what's literal, but the alchemist never specifically says he's looking for his brother. He says when he's alone and without his "peerless twin" but that could be June talking metaphorically about July.
and right before the "scry their tale" line he says " It's who we were. It's who we are," as if to say literally that he's looking back on his/their past
Noyes has explored these themes of myth and the nature of story before, and it feels like a lot of the album hinges on stories being so transportative that you get lost in them. And it could be that The Alchemist/Future June is reading the story of himself and July to figure out how he can save her (maybe to go back time and "get this right")

also at the end of Eve there's this
"…Only there we’re free and we make a home" (Alchemist)
“A Summer Peach with her Corn field Groom.” (June)
sure sounds like the Alchemist is June imagining the alternate timeline where July lived and they settled down together

Listened a couple times and I’m on the verge of loving this but I can’t get past how homogenous it is, doesn’t really justify the length. The story and poetry are great though and if anything this album is immersive to the max

Finally jammed this. The folkier stuff is really good, but man, this thing is massive and I lost interest a few times. The highs were high, at least.

Even though it didn’t hit me full-on, I can totally understand this being someone’s absolute darling.

"I really hope he succeeds because Eve is just devastating to me"
The imagery of it is so beautiful and moving. This album is outstanding
I agree June might be the alchemist but maybe Julys grandfather factors in here somewhere too

This is lovely wow
Have people made Oh Hellos comparisons? Strong 'through the deep dark valley' vibes in a very very good way
