I literally do not think this has anything in common with Simple Math at all. Can't see it.
I mean, obviously I'm exaggerating. What it really has NOTHING in common with is Cope.
But Simple Math, the song, would be horrendously out of place here. As would Mighty, Virgin, April Fool, Leaky Breaks, Leave It Alone, Pensacola. Just a totally different approach to songwriting and soundscaping here, in my eyes.

also is it me or is the production on this boringly (is that a word) clean - imagine dragons type clean

weird how this comment section isn't acknowledging that Angel of Death is one of their greatest ever tunes imo

I mean yeah, I think we're in agreement this isn't the same as Simple Math. I think the only debatable point is if the production is comparable or not.

sowing sell to me why the production here is good pls

I think it accomplishes exactly what it sets out to. They specifically wanted it to sound "cinematic" and that's straight from their press release. MO has always aimed for the stars with their sound, so it's not necessarily for everyone, but it definitely checks all the right boxes: songs flow into each other nicely, some epic crescendos, plenty of lush reprieves, thematic ties to past albums and itself, elaborate storytelling, motifs...I know I just ventured outside of your original question lol.
Short answer is I could see how there could be too much going on for some, but I also see how it could sound like the full realization of every dramatic bone in the band's body to others (in a good way).

I don't expect this to be viewed as better than ABMTTS. I don't even think that. Will probably end up near Simple Math in terms of fan opinion, in the sense that a big chunk of fans will love how overzealous and dramatic it is, epic choruses and production included, while others will say it's a bit much and long for something grittier. While I'm perfectly happy with this (in case that's not obvious), I do think it represents the end of an avenue once again. The next album shouldn't try to outproduce this. I believe their next logical move is one in a rockier direction (maybe a better Cope?), if they can't invent a new sound entirely. We'll see!

About halfway through my first listen and blown away honestly. I’m normally not a fan of albums sequenced like this, oftentimes the transitions seem forced. Not the case here at all. There aren’t like 10 second bleed-ins between songs, just masterful production.
Also didn’t realize this was about a band member’s father passing - I’m gonna have to steel myself for my lyric readthrough haha

Two listens in and I don't think the production is any glossier/slicker/overdone than either Black Mile or Simple Math. At some points, Black Mile sounds featherlight to me, and this has more...I don't know, texture? Heft? Maybe it's the electronics.
Admittedly, I wasn't as enamored with Black Mile as most (though I still love it). This album could surpass it for me.

I do, however, wish even more that they would have pulled out all the stops at the end of Bed Head.

Yeah that's one of my minor qualms. I had the (mis?)fortune of hearing them perform it before it was finished (there's a video of it floating around somewhere on reddit) and the ending ROCKED. They glossed over it too much in the studio.

That is exactly why this version of Bed Head makes me mad lol

Hmm. Hard to say how I feel about this ha. I liked it, not sure I loved it. I adore some tracks and some are just "pretty".

The inaudible/audible part is either an inside joke or is lol-worthy, but then for some reason "wheel you down to the old folks home" tickles me. I also like "I jump you like an animal / you bite back like an animal" line for some reason even though he rhymes animal with animal lmfao.
