The guy has it at a 4.0.
@dangerousdarrin what's it feel like to have your totally innocent and not at all weird comment about an album taken to page 15?

and, when there’s an album where there’s a clear distinction between what the artist worked hard on, and the filler, I find myself defining the album by what I like, while kinda passing over what I don’t.
Like, for instance if an album had 18 songs, and ~9 of them are trash, but the 9 good songs still represent what I’d consider a highlight of that artists career, I’m gonna be more optimistic and positive towards it than an album that is just consistently underwhelming.

but, like, don’t get me wrong, in those instances I’d love it if the artist had just cut those songs.

I appreciate album flow quite a bit, but in general it gets super over-prioritized in critical circles. Just like lyrics.

it can be an important aspect of an album, but it doesn’t have to be

So interesting. I almost always listen to full albums (never skip) or put on a specific playlist, only very rarely do I pick out particular songs or jump between albums. I used to do that a lot more, But that also may just be a function of how I listen to music, which the vast majority of the time is in the background while working/reading/exercising so I don't necessarily want to be thinking about what's up next. It's also pretty rare that I like actively dislike songs on anything I check out and I guess I have a decent tolerance for stuff that's just ok so I'm not like itching to go for the skip button any time a track I don't particularly like comes on. Also because like 90% of my listening time consists of what I've recently checked out rather than revisiting old stuff so I'm usually still evaluating what I'm listening to and don't want to skip.

@noler I get that yeah. Like in general I think people can apply whatever critiques they want to an album but if someone was trashing on, say, a Backstreet Boys album for not being a strong holistic listening experience I'd certainly raise my eyebrows at them lol

When it comes to flow (and stuff like lyrics) it's really important to evaluate artist intent. Tbh I still think most artists (at least those I listen to) do put quite a bit of thought to flow and while it's not the be all end all I'd argue it's almost always a fair thing to consider if you tend to care about it. That's not universal of course; certainly there are many artists (particularly in the pop sphere) who have really embraced streaming and just stuff a shit ton of songs into albums for no good reason, and often tack on a bunch of bonus tracks and what not. And obviously this is going to be a bigger factor for a concept album than a regular one. But just in general, as someone who listens mostly to full albums and generally doesn't skip (which I realize is a choice) I'm always thinking about how the album works as a piece and I'm going to be disappointed if there are weaker tracks.
In my case I tend to think the ideal album length is between roughly 30-50 minutes, at that length I can forgive a few tracks that don't bring too much to the party, but once you get over that I think it's harder to justify, unless of course you're talking about a double album (at least in the case where the artist set out to write one rather than just having a really long album and splitting it across discs). In that case it doesn't make as much sense to say they should have cut some tracks.
Idk what I'm really trying to say here, just sharing some musings.

"Ur missing out on sooo much good shit that was never really intended for that format."
yea i used to be one of those album format guys until i realized i was dumb and discovered a ton of great electronic EPs/singles/comps/mixes

In a way I guess I'm almost lazy for just listening to albums because I always feel like scrounging through EPs/singles/comps etc. is more work, like it's easier to just find albums I like mostly as a whole.

I do listen to EPs a decent amount now, there was a time I didn't bother with them because I thought they weren't long enough to be impactful, lol

EPs do be underappreciated tho 😳

Yeah I mean there are a lot of EPs out there that have as great a flow/cohesion as any full length album. I do still tend to gravitate toward EPs that have those markers though, I'm less likely to listen to ones that have a bunch of album tracks/remixes/alt versions on them.

most eps are throwaways, but that has more to do with artists’ idea of what an ep should be than the medium itself

True, it’s also a bit of a genre thing sometimes. Like how seemingly half of the best shoegaze/dream pop releases are EPs.

Agreed Sowing, HB and Crack-Up are the autumn albums, s/t more spring/winter.
