Spencer lol, boyband vocals, he was in From first to last... which was an emo band...

I have the sneaking suspician that Henshall doesn't want to have Ross exit the band because they have started the band together, it would be just like kicking out a life long friend, but yeah if it where anything that would drop this from a 5 to a 4.5 for me it would be Ross's vocals

I don't get all the Ross hate. The dude is super theatrical and meshes well with the band. And the super heavy moments coupled with his lighter vocals add to the story because we see the duel sides of this character's personality.

His higher pitched vocals suit the old dad prog style they were doing vs their more modern metal sound nowadays

But their old stuff isn't drastically different than the new stuff... the new stuff is a little heavier but it's not like they've had some dynamic sound shift. The band still sounds like Haken, Ross writes vocal lines that are exactly how he's always written vocal lines.

I think Ross is planning on creating a solo album. It would be interesting to see what he sounds like on music he's written for himself
And while we're on the prog vocalists hunt, I'd add Andrew Mailloux from Rishloo (in my top 5 probably), Mariusz Duda from Riverside, Ohme from Gazpacho (amazing voice as well), Renske from Katatonia (of course)

Oh, and I know you guys probably haven't heard of them, but George Prokopiou from Mother of Millions and Poem is an exceptional vocalist in my book. His vocals are so powerful and he kills it live, on of the best live performances I've seen.

If we still talking prog vocalists, Kin Etik from Twelve Foot Ninja is really good. Very different style from most prog dudes tho

I really like Ross, though his additions to the music are easily the least inventive of the band. His theatrical approach in Aquarius, parts of Visions, and parts of The Mountain were really his peak. I really don't feel like he does anything special on this one except parts of Messiah, and that's only because it reprises The Cockroach King lol

I quite like this slightly heavier approach compared to the more atmospheric Mountain. The chorus melodies feel like you could snap them out of a sumerian post-hardcore or metalcore band, which makes it all the better

I can't necessarily blame people for not liking the vocals. They're not exactly full of personality. However I DO think they fit the music perfectly. It's definitely a stylistic thing
