well not really cause death, necrophagia, morbid angel, and master (among others) were all firmly established by the time this came out, not to mention the true pioneers like hellhammer/celtic frost, bathory, sodom, etc who already had full lengths out before this but yeah this was massively influential

eh, fair argument.

Boring and overrated.
This can barely be classified as death metal. The record is basically one dimensional thrash with harsher vocals. Venom has a similar style, but their first two records smoke Possessed.
Speaking of the vocals, they aren't even good. Jeff has three average screams on the entire record. One is on the track Evil Warriors, the other on Twisted Minds, and the final on 'Death' metal. After that, no more variation.
The only memorable riff is the title track, the leads are forgettable wankery, and the drumming patterns are the same for the ENTIRE album.
Scream Bloody Gore = Death Metal.
Seven Churches = repetitive shit.

Death, Necrophagia, Morbid Angel and Master were "firmly established" but not on any kind of large scale. I mean geographically. Getting the first LP out doesn't make you first but it makes you first to the record stores where they might not have any Death or MA tapes.
What I like about it is how much it straddles that line. It's the perfect album to pin down the transition into Death Metal proper.
