I hope this doesn't start wearing off soon but this is infectious. I had a complaint early about the instrumentation but eventually everything earwormed itself in. And Einar is best he's ever been. Girlfriend and I have been vocally practicing to this and also feeling very, very jealous of his angelic pipes.

Yeah Einar's performance is great, as usual

While I really enjoy this album I still wish it had been a solo project.
I'm all for bands trying and doing new things, but the way this plays out would be like Tommy Rogers putting out some of his solo material as the next BtBaM release.
It's *really* good, but it shows nothing of the other band member's character. Case in point; you have one of the most amazing drummers in the world in Baard Kolstad and there is nary a lick to be found.
Also of note; the production/mix on this is stellar. Very easy and pleasant on the ears.

I'm loving this. I'm more into vocals and synths than guitars (I think that everything's been done in the guitar department for prog) so this record is a step up for me. Only song that I don't like that much is Foreigner, found it quite boring.

I Lose Hope sounds like it wouldn't have been that out of place on Bilateral

On the contrary, Baard in particular shines on this record. He may not be playing the immediate in-your-face stuff like he did on Congregation, but the way his drums shape songs like Alleviate, Distant Bells from the mid-point onward and The Sky Is Red is incredible.
The same can honestly be said of the guitarists on here. My complaint about them is that they're too low in the mix. But if you listen very carefully, there is superb, intricate guitar licks on nearly every song.
The more I listen to Pitfalls, obvious genre shifts aside, the more it's evident that nearly every single Leprous element is on display here (maybe aside from 8-string chugs, but hey even The Sky Is Red has those) - it's just the way the album is produced that gives you a different impression.
That's why the record is so strange. And why I love it a ton.

be my throne is easily the worst song on this thing, they axe that and there isn’t a bad song on here

"On the contrary, Baard in particular shines on this record."
There is a subtlety to the playing from him (and all others) that I was going to mention that was still of great quality, just not what I've come to expect. That expectation is totally on me and not something (obviously) that is the bands fault. It's a very selfish stance to have, but damnit, I have it all the same
"That's why the record is so strange. And why I love it a ton."
Precisely -- but I can't help but imagine it as something heavier.

Still the worst album in my opinion.
