I don't think knowledge of theory and enjoyment of music are at all mutually exclusive haha, Jacob Collier seems to have more fun making and listening to music than anyone else on the planet and his theory brane is a weapon to surpass metal gear. It just shifts your priorities I guess. I'm not particularly well read regarding music theory; I just play guitar a lot and will on occassion set aside some time to try and break down how an album ticks musically.
In the case of this album, I find it's two main facets to be at odds with one another rather than working in tandem due to a perceived discrepancy in quality. Make of it whatever you will.
And @intothepit, I'm leaning on the latter.

Hahaha if theory + musical enjoyment were antagonistic factions, a huge chunk of musicians would have serious masochism complexes (although given how hard it is to stay afloat financially making music, that's probably the case anyway)

I'm prone to being over-analytical in general life situations, something I find unhelpful and stress-inducing. I don't want any added opportunities for that, especially when participating in something I consider my hobby. I realise not everyone will feel this way mind.

There s a difference in making music for people and music for musicians apparently...those parts make me feel good! I m sorry that doesn t work that way for you.

it's not about knowledge so much as prioritization, really -- there are many different "logics" of appreciating an album and each person favors one over another (e.g. someone might find this compositionally disjointed/inconsistent whilst someone else tracks instead the "mood")
I won't disagree that the clean sections are less sophisticated but I think they still accomplish a certain goal
I'm also the kind of person that eats dessert food at the same time as the savoury stuff

Very chaotic-neutral of you.

Yea I also feel that this balances the two moods pretty seamlessly, I don’t think it seems “random” or disjointed or whatever.

I usually eat my dessert first what does that make me

Settling on a well-deserves ‘light’ 4/5. Currently sitting just outside my top 10 for the year.

loving the instrumental work on this, but the vocals are just way too boring. i understand the point it to stay in the background but not once does he step out of line here

Dudes, have you tried to put both albums together? The soundscape in the end of 8000 Miles West is perfectly matched to Mazarine's intro.
