Also Rudy this review is awesome and you're nuts for thinking this is their best since Alligator.

I never gave their last album a chance, as I was sort of burnt out on the National at the time.
Alligator and High Violet are hands down my favourites from the band so I might check this one out soon.

I wasn't feeling their last album too much but this is sounding pretty great so far.

It may not reach the heights of High Violet or Boxer, but god damn this is an excellent adventure and I'm glad they made album this different.

A lot of discussion (and deservingly so) about the female guest spots, but I definitely don't think they're placed to distract us from a lack of melody/chorus writing ability. The National have been needing a shake up to their sound. I think this works beautifully as a one album experiment. It's not something they could successfully pull off for the next three records, but it's exactly the kind of wrinkle they've been missing over their last couple releases. If they dropped another SWB everyone would be saying they got complacent/stagnant. This is precisely as adventurous as I'd hoped they'd be - their core sound is intact and they've accented it with all these gorgeous guest vocals. What more could a National fan want? I don't get the complaints but then again I rarely do mid-swoon over an album/artist.

this is exactly the kinda progression i feared after sleep well beast. the band is taking a background position and lulling in an enjoyable but not quite memorable way. this probably requires a few more listens before i can really judge it (as learned from other experiences with this band) but i can't say i'm happy with the style they went for with this
