I don't like an obscure blackened death metal band so that makes me a 14 year old, HA sput 101. I literally explained in bullet points why I don't like this album, I don't need to explain myself anymore

Well, normally I'd like to discuss why you rated this a 1 considering I fundamentally disagree with all of your bullet points, but that's your call.

">too long"

Length is immaterial if the content is enjoyable or engaging in some manner. The atmosphere this crafts is powerful enough to provide that level of intrigue, and there is a clear sense of grandeur considering the size of songs and their heavy impact on the listener.

">no clear direction"

I'd rather ask you what you mean by this; they have a very clear objective on this album. They've aimed to make a harrowing black metal album with a healthy dosage of death metal, the emphasis being upon crushing intensity, a murky atmosphere, moments of dread, with only brief instances of respite from the darkness. The songs are able to flow together so well because they have a common sound. Calling it directionless seems rather baselss.

">all riffs sound the same"

That's just not true my man. This seems more like bias against an album you didn't like.

">all songs for that matter sound the same"

But how? Because they feature a similar atmosphere or thematic content? They do not blend; rather, the songs CPNNECT and RELATE to each other. It leads to an album that is very tightly composed from beginning to end. That is stylistic cohesion. You can hear plenty of differences between tracks, but not if you're not paying attention.

">the clean parts are totally unnecessary"

Not at all. I think they provide welcome change and can differentiate the songs, punctuate climaxes, and so on. They're able to create very captivating moments of calm that give a false sense of security before they're inevitably swept away. Once again, clarification would help--unnecessary how exactly?

">the only good thing about this album is the vocals"

Vocals are good, agreed. Which means this album is a 1 right?

I'm messing with you a bit, but for some reason your posting is oddly aggressive when addressing this. Did Warforged steal your tax refunds or something

I get that length is immaterial as long as the content is good, but imo the EP that they did previously was a lot better because of its short run time

That's great and all but I see no real purpose for most of the album, do you know what the lyrics are about? cause to me it's just words and nothing more. Parallax II by btbam for example had a narrative throughout and the instrumentals wove throughout to convey their purpose when telling the story.

"That's just not true my man. This seems more like bias against an album you didn't like."

Riffs are just bland boring, chug chug, trem picking back to chug chug, it's mind-numbing and one of my most hated parts of this album

If you showed a random person on the street a song from this album, and then showed them another song from the album right after I would guarantee you that they wouldn't tell the difference.

Probably my biggest issue with this album, the clean sections are AIMLESS and POINTLESS every time, and they go NOWHERE, if anything all they do is take me out of the experience whenever they appear. If they where short little interludes or something I'd be ok with it but no, sometimes they just pointlessly meander for MINUTES at a time.

"Vocals are good, agreed. Which means this album is a 1 right?"

Sure guess I'll give it a PITY point for those being the only redeeming factor, all except the vocals on "Voice", probably one of the most horrible and horrifying vocals I've ever heard, I wouldn't make my worst enemy listen to that atrocity.

"I'm messing with you a bit, but for some reason your posting is oddly aggressive when addressing this. Did Warforged steal your tax refunds or something"

That'll happen when you sit through 1hr and 17mins of mind-numbing violently horrible music.

And you've done nothing to convince me it's even close to that. There are definitely clear progressions to songs so I'm not sure why you want to hold on to such a strong bias.

BABYMETAL - Metal Resistance - 4.5

^Okay I was gonna try and add some notes with appreciation of some specific tracks to help the brilliantly put Mars text...but as I mentioned earlier it seems I'm right and you are not "all ears" by any means...

Oh how I wish I could write like you Mars. That's brilliantly put.

They admittedly repeat riffs and subtle change them along tracks in order to provide that cohesion, since the atmosphere is damn dense, dark and suffocating...

Also against this sounding the same, once you have tracks way more an experimental basis (Old Friend f.e.) than others, some more prog BDM driven (Beneath The Forest Floor) and others to a TechDeath vibe (The Color Of My Memory). The mentioned tracks are awesome by the way and, in my opinion, work very well, both within the album or by themselves.

Anyway, I think this album deserves at least to be more seriously discussed (other than being just dismissively bashed), cause there's an unique vibe to it and it definitely shook things up. I would love a Mars rev.

Replying on mobile sucks.

I might actually review this. Don't understand the counter-culture that hit this when it was never a super-popular-must-like album to begin with.
