I just adore the drumming on this album.
Between this, Brand New and Gang of Youths I'm going to have a rough time deciding on an AOTY...

You have sad songs at 7/10 boney ya goon
Well yeah but everything after is a 4.5 or 5 (well except this, for now) so it doesn't deserve to be grouped with them imo

You have sad songs at 7/10 boney ya goon
so do i but they certainly started to find their songwriting chops at that album (while also containing a few duds, available is one of their all time best and there are several other top cuts on it)

But to say they didn't do anything right is just inaccurate

SSFDL did a lot right. Also some very, very wrong things (Sugar Wife).
TWFM was the album that got me to love this band. I was already kind of into them before but none of their other albums completely clicked with me until i heard TWFM.

@Talons; Well yeah, but I took his saying they were doing something right as an intentional understatement and with that interpretstion it doesn't apply to Sad Songs

Wait how is TWFM not immediate? I feel like the hooks and melodies there are way more pronounced. Here, it's more of a subtle beauty that requires the listener to draw it out of the experience (like High Violet). I don't think that's just a minority opinion but I could be wrong.

They're not an immediate band but TWFM is probably their least immediate to most listeners b/c of how subdued and soupy the production and songwriting is. It's their least percussive or graspable.

besides boxer, i think twfm was the most immediate to me. songs like don't swallow the cap, graceless, this is the last time, demons, and pink rabbits are pretty easy to digest

I actually found this a lot easier to get into than TWFM. That one has yet to grow one me unfortunately.

Demons, Pink Rabbits, I Should Live in Salt, Fireproof, Graceless...?
I don't know, if everyone disagrees then it's obviously just me. Maybe my sense of "accessible" is out of whack.

Anyhow, this is stunning most of the time, but there's a few lulls that are either boring or haven't clicked with me yet. But I'm 4 listens in now so I felt comfortable enough with the 4.0 rating, placing it behind High Violet (5), Alligator (4.5), and TWFM (4.5), and ahead of Boxer (3.5) as well as anything else they've done.

sowing i gotta tell ya
that boxer rating is wack

Why don't you just chill down foxxxy? Most people have come around to TWFM at this point and you're just coming across as a jerk.

You just seem to keep badmouthing TWFM every time it comes up and your dismissive tone in that last comment bothered me. I realize I probably overreacted though.
