“A pretty common occurrence, especially when the album in question is one by someone they've loved in the past. They're pretty wimpy when it comes to giving lower ratings, below a 6.5 is effectively a pan for them.”

Yep. First time I heard this I knew they were gonna pan it but predicted a 5-something because Arcade Fire is one of their darlings. Deserved like a 3-something tho

I loved Reflektor, but this album is definitely a dud compared to the rest of their discography. Hopefully it gets better with a few more listens.

Grew on me. I don't know if it's one of those "so bad it's good" situations but Everything Now, Signs of Life, Creature Comfort, Electric Blue, and Put Your Money On Me are all great and the other stuff ranges from bad filler to average fare 80s pop. I actually might prefer this over The Suburbs -- with that said this is a far cry from Funeral/Reflektor/Neon Bible.

Preferring this to The Suburbs is a crime

With the exclusion of Creature Comfort you got all the decent songs except for Infinite_Content though

The Suburbs was boring and I honestly remember very little about it. I always enjoy it while I'm actively listening but it has no real staying power. This, for as neon and plastic as it is, does.

Suburbs to me has so many great songs but definitely not as cohesive as a record compared to Reflektor/Neon Bible/Funeral which to me seemed very cohesive in theme/sound/energy/etc. This record just lacks the wittiness or depth of past records, for example Infinite Content is essentially thematically the same track as We Used to Wait for The Suburbs except unabashedly straight to the point without any depth and contemplation.

Bumped to a 2.5 because I like some of the disco grooves

Suburbs is a near classic, some of their best songwriting is there. I'd argue it's their most cohesive overall actually.

Absolutely agreed JWT, this is shallow as hell and has very little artistic merit of any kind outside of the fact that crafting earworm melodies isn't as easy as people make it out to be. This is very much a plastic album, but I am fine with enjoying it at that level and realizing I'll never take any meaning from it.

The melodies on this aren't earworms though, most of the time when they're memorable it's because they're bad.

Eh - in many cases you're right (esp. Chemistry/Infinite Content) but the 5 songs I outlined a few posts up are genuinely catchy and memorable. Once again, I know I'm the outlying opinion and am not trying to sway anyone. I get the hate and it's justified.

Agree completely sowing, Arcade fire has been a band that to me with each release had something to say when they dropped a record, this record very much seems to be just a going through the motions tour de force exploration of the sounds they introduced on Reflektor and rings very hollow, and the sugary coating on the outside so far hasn't been enough to want me to come back for more.

And maybe that was their aim, to emulate a style in a decade where lots of soulless music was made that was purely for immediate consumption without any thought or deeper meaning then just a catchy melody.

I've seen some people try to make arguments like that but imo they're bullshit. The music just isn't that good, and Arcade Fire are too self-important to make something in a tongue-in-cheek way like that - and even if that is what they were going for I think they failed.

Yeah this is their first really shallow, unsubstantial record they've made. Even though I love The Suburbs, I think Funeral and Neon Bible are their most cohesive albums.

Sowing you like We Don't Deserve Love right? It's not amazing, but it's the best here I'm thinking.

I won't disagree with you boney, Arcade Fire are above making an album this shallow. Even their last record had so many great basslines and catchy tracks, this doesn't really seem to have any moments that live up to that.

With Reflektor they really threw themselves into the new style, even if it didn't always work it was never uninspired. Here they don't progress too much from what they did on Reflektor and it's their first album that doesn't seem to have a unifying concept behind it.
