Confused af, 98m80s. You have DSO pretty low rated and there's consistently better drumming on their stuff for me. To my taste anyway. This dude has a couple of neat tricks with his orchestration on the cymbals though. I'm more partial to incorporating the whole kit, really.

I never really liked cymbals until this album happened. DSO huh? I wanted to really love them. Eventually I felt that on a given track they often played about three completely different yet tonally similar songs at the same time and added overcooked lyrical philosphizing to enhance appeal with the ever discerning pretentious elitist crowd. Liturgy is guilty of similar grandstanding, except with a politically correct image.

Lol really now? Are Litergy PC just cause the singer is trans? You're focusing on the wrong things all the way around. As a listener, you ought to try to hear how the parts those play overlap and harmonize/rub together. It's like modernist classical music. The jarring nature of it is pretty intentional.

Calling it like I see it since you asked. I've enjoyed a few things from both projects. I recognize the effort and inputs required from the artists involved. Unfortunately for me, neither project really arrives. Politics are involved in the attention both bands get, for better or worse. I don't personally care one way or the other but I'm far from everyone. The philosophy crap is elitist bait for sure. None of that writing is useful to anyone.

It's useful as good art, I'd say. And I live for art.

I guess the atmosphere shines here for me. It's a very strong continuation of that classic 2nd wave sound. Like a logical evolution of that pure 2nd wave sound without the wrench of other genres or atonality thrown into the mix. And yeah, the drumming is a bit more creative than your standard black metal fare.
