Album Rating: 4.5
I remember checking this band like 10 years ago. They certainly changed their sound, so far this bordering a 4.5 for me, but that could go up easily...
I don't feel like checking their previous releases... how is this compared to their best work? I remember them being very "faceless"... Now they sound more like Cynic....
Don't crucify me please!

Listening now and see little reason to change my rating so far tbh

So basically this has all the same problems as Spiritual Migration but lacks the high-points of that album (Mind as Universe, Zazen Meditation, Consciousness 2-parter), then again it doesn't have anything quite as bad as SM's t/t.
Some stunning musicianship but parts just don't segue into each other effectively and the electronics don't gel with the rest of the instrumentation. Oh and those cleans are awful; no vibrato on any sustained notes and processed to hell. Toad can't even get mad at me here because the guy is not a ~talented~ singer lol
Probably the most annoying thing about this record is a couple songs start really well (Prison Skin, No Faced Mindless) but then abruptly change pace, often transitioning into these shoe-horned clean or ambient sections which sap the songs of any momentum. Despite Masvidal's annoying vocoder vox, Living Waves is the best track, but even then it drops the ball in the second half and the band seem to run out of ideas and fall back on some djent-esque chuggery.
Unlike their debut or Core, the atmosphere that they try so god damn hard to conjure doesn't stem from their songwriting or expressive playing but from all the bells-and-whistles they tack on, which makes everything feel pretty contrived. It's a shame because we know from past efforts that they can write amazing songs but I think ambition has just gotten the better of them, rip ahrd

Obviously I disagree, but you gave it a shot

Honestly I can totally see why fans of their older work would be put off by this, but I think it's still a tremendous work in its own right. SM suffered from some pretty awkward composition/songwriting from time to time and seemed random, but here they serve a much bigger purpose.

i'm surprised most of the 5's for this album seem legit, and there are a lot

What is this and why is it so polarizing

Album Rating: 4.0
it's ~prog metal~ and it's quite good

This is a truthful 5, people will definitely disagree since this album is even more experimental and divisive than Spiritual.

Amen MarsKid. I see what Toad is saying. He may sound dumb but he has a point against Jac and birdman lol.

Just because Persefone changed their style more on this doesn't mean they got worse. They still kept that creative edge and flow like SM.

@Jac You can't expect straight up Death Metal from a band that is also Progressive Metal. I guess you're mad because they kicked ass in a different tone. ;)

Honestly, I love the cleans. They're not the most bombastic or anything, but they fit the music and are entirely genuine. Their delivery works out pretty well honestly. Whether or not he's talented is subjective.
And he wasn't expecting straight-DM my man, these guys have never been that way and he knows that. It's more so a question of direction and songwriting that he's posing and by the end of the day opinions are all welcome except for Sint's tbqh
