I think Austin did it all or mostly all by himself the first time then decided it sounded like crap, so after doing Roads he gave the recordings to Colin Marston to have him remaster those, too. Roads had a really good sound so I expect the remaster to sound pretty good.

roads was overproduced as fuck, unless u consider it a melodeath album which it definitely draws from anyway. social disservices had suitable production.

Social Disservices was pretty bad. Production on Roads was fine.

I'm not big on that one or Kentucky, though neither are bad by any means. I have yet to jam their first two.

Disagree!

nah production on roads was bitch-made. williecore hard. im not really into this whole soft-cock production on bm thing.
|
| |
its so counter-intuitive to give black metal this clean resonant production unless its twinkle-folk bm or some shit but thats never really what made Panopticon good so it doesnt really work for him imo.
|
| |
i agree with you but panopticon is, inherently, soft-cock bm. s/t and collapse were easily his best but the resonant sound on this album doesn't sound out of place to me

see i really disagree with this notion that panopticon has one musical identity, and that a certain production style could possibly be appropriate across all iterations

disservices just had a generally crappy production job. The guitars were super weak-sounding. It was supposed to be a super aggressive and angry record but it never was able to achieve that. Hopefully they make it as heavy as it should've been.

"see i really disagree with this notion that panopticon has one musical identity, and that a certain production style could possibly be appropriate across all iterations"
i never said he had one musical identity and "a certain production style could possibly be appropriate across all iterations"
i merely said i don't like it.
another reason i didnt like roads is because he added all the super generic melodeth passages. that tied with the soft-cock production were a dampener on my enjoyment.
s/t and collapse were easily his best but the resonant sound on this album doesn't sound out of place to me
its better on this than roads yeah. this was fine. pretty run of the mill straight forward whatever but a pleasant listen.
and nah i liked how sterile Disservices sounded, everything you want zaru will ruin the record tbh.

yeah gotta agree with varu on this, social probably has the worst production job of all his records
|
| |
and thats what makes it better than roads :D
(besides not having awful generic melodeth everywhere)
