" it's clear that he listened to it enough, he's just not that into pop punk clearly."
odd criticism considering my main beef with this album is due to my familiarity with the genre

I think the album is great but I completely understand why some people would dislike this. Fan of the band or not, you cant deny these guys have put out the same album since the upsides and there are other bands in the genre that do this style just as well

I'm not gonna argue with you, everyone has the right to dislike something, but I find kind of fascinating you find this band so offensive

If you think The Wonder Years have produced the same album for their entire career you are crazy,
They have evolved so much with each album imo

"...but I'm not sure why he bothers reviewing albums in a genre he doesn't care for." [3]
Because.. maybe he doesn't listen to them (as I stated before)
He probably listened to like 3 songs and said "oh this is just pop punk".
I see him growing to be some pretentious critic who drinks fine wine and snarls at everything that's not artsy (or whom Pitchfork doesn't deem artsy).
He is an enigma.. I still question his ways

The response to the hype surrounding this album is just a huge reminder of why the whole concept of rock music criticism is flawed. We're not discussing anything quantifiable here like the complexity of the album's root patterns, so unless some music theorist wants to take the time to analyze the album, we're just throwing around subjective opinions about abstract concepts such as how "punk" or "passionate" the album is. Somehow though, people think that tossing in some pretentious garbage with their opinion somehow makes it more valid, which makes absolutely no sense. The source of my high rating stems from this album's ability to make me genuinely as excited about rock music as I was when I wasn't a jaded software engineer, and the source of sputnikmusic's high aggregate rating comes from the fact that this band has the special ability of inspiring similar feelings in so many of its listeners. I understand that people have differing opinions, but I also find it funny how butthurt people get when something they don't like gets highly rated.

But I'm a jaded chemical engineer so doesn't apply to me so bye.

all criticism should be taken as is people's opinions; there's no definitive right or wrong in art, despite the fact that people seem to agree that some works are better than others.

music theory cannot be used to validate the quality of a piece of music. music theory only evaluates how an aspect of music achieves an aesthetic outcome, regardless of the quality of that outcome.
I understand that people have differing opinions, but I also find it funny how butthurt people get when something they don't like gets highly rated.
yea this is about right.

I definitely agree, my convoluted point was that I see way too much criticism trying to be passed off as some objective fact, whereas it's just a subjective opinion. When pseudo-objective metrics like numerical ratings start to get involved it gets even more messy.

The engineering feels are real haha

I don't know anyone who does this seriously. I mean, reviewers will always state opinions as facts, as will fans, but you'd have to be an idiot to think that what you think about a work is absolutely true, though you could justify your opinion pretty convincingly. So, assuming these people aren't idiots, you should always act as if nobody's acting as if their opinion is fact.

Fair point taken. Obviously I don't frequent this site enough to recognize how seriously people take their opinions, but goddamn some of the opinions in this thread are stupidly abrasive.
