Used to think that. Colors is still a hell of a lot of fun, but there's something more raw and genuine about Alaska to me.

Silent Circus, Alaska and Colors are where it's at with BTBAM, though. They just trailed off from there.

Bumped this up again. ;)

But seriously, if I were to give a spontaneous BTBAM ranking, this would probably be right under TGM and Colors. Prime example of an album that gave me an awful impression at first, but grew fast after repeated listens.

compositionally it's certainly one of their most structured but damn they just rip pages out of the TGM book and replace any ferocity with over-stimulated and over-exaggerated cleans

This is definitely closer to Dream Theater's style of metal than anything in the BTBAM back catalog, and it's probably better than anything DT has done since SFAM tbh. That's not a high bar to reach, but I think that this album exceeds it. Don't close the book after one listen though. It took me a couple of listens for it to start clicking.

Considering metal dweebs are the only people outside of teenagers who still buy CDs, it isn't that surprising.
