I agree, modern DT is mediocre in its best moments (so is the new song), but it has not often been completely insufferable

I still feel like I'm the only one who's optimistic on the new album

But it's 34 songs...even Soundtracks For The Blind doesn't have that many lol
Especially since it's modern DT and how it'll take 30 hours to get through, prob won't be great.

Do you really think I give a shit? :-P

Not saying you have to, just making a point how it's beyond overblown.

I'm pretty sure a Rhapsody of Fire album is more overblown, and those usually have 9-12 tracks

Petrucci said the 34 songs constitute about two hours-worth of music
It will need great diversity

Man you have bands like Agoraphobic Nosebleed who put out albums like Altered States of America which is 20 minutes long and has 100 tracks lol
It's a ridiculous genre tbh but I love it

Agreed Ocean haha
Interesting that Petrucci revealed 2 hours in the 34 tracks, it's clear they're going for more prog rock opera influence than the metal, along with shorter song lengths including interludes, given the s/t as well. Predicting it'll be somewhere in the 2-3 range, it definitely has the potential to be better than the s/t but probably none of the others.

I also feel like I'm the only one who likes the s/t, even though most people rated that album a 4 anyways.

The s/t was just painfully average

It has a few decent moments, but those do not make up for the poor production and great lack of interesting developments
The Bigger Picture is my guilty pleasure though, I'll admit

That's a decent song, so is surrender to reason

Yeah, in a sense they succeeded in making effective shorter tracks. They're all kind of mediocre, but hey. In fact, in my opinion, the major failure of the album is Illumination Theory in all of its completely undeserved 22 minutes (except perhaps for the decent orchestral segment and the unoriginal but quite beautiful piano outro)

they need to make an album that's like 40 minutes, or at least under and hour. The last time they did that was Images and Words and that's one of their best albums.

Yea could maybe benefit from that yea. That was also pretty early in their career though.

Usually I don't see many comments about the last track on the album, Space-Dye Vest, the last contribution of their great keyboardist Kevin Moore. For me, this is really one of the highlights on the album. With this track, he proved that he is a great musician and that he left the band by the wide door. My real compliments to this great musician.
